PoP is BACK!
OK! That's more like it! I didn't want to review the first version because the controls were so poor that I was afraid giving it a bad rating would help kill it before it really got going. Version 1.0.1 has fixed 95% of the problem! It is WAY better!
PoP was the first really cool game I played on my first computer (a PowerBook 100!), way back when. Like a lot of really good things, it has aged really, really well. PoP is still one of the best games around. The first 2 sequels were great, too, but I never much liked the 3D versions that came later. They were just derivatives of other 3D games. They lost the simple charm of the original. I am sooooo happy to get this great classic back on my iPod Touch! And, now, in a fairly useable form.
The controls still aren't absolutely perfect, but it is playable, now. The people giving it 1 and 2 stars are being way to hard on it. Those ratings are likely to just kill it completely and I do not want that to happen. So come on, buy it! It's only a buck! And, Ubisoft, keep working on it! It is worth the effort!
Prince of Persia (Retro)
This is one of the very best classic arcade adaptations of any game I have ever played on the iPhone. The controls are tricky but not impossible and the game itself was meant to be a real challenge (it took me about 2 months to finish the original - which I still own btw- Prince of Persia for the Apple //e in May 1989 cost $30 back then so 0.99 cents for this full version is a no-brainer)
Prince of Persia was the ultimate 2D side scroller in its day and it is still a joy to play. The graphics are fluid as they are based on cinematic action sequences. The sound with headphones on is even better than I remember. The running and jumping actions take some getting used to, especially with the iPhone's screen controls but once you master this (and fighting - Remember, Parry, Parry THEN attack with your sword and prepare to Parry again!) you will have fun.
You will need to remember which potions were not poisoned and look out for secret rooms (Hint: Jumping up & down often reveals hidden ceiling panels)
I noticed some complaints about the lack of a proper save when a phone call comes in and that some (young kids I guess) didn't think the controls or responses were timely enough. Actually this is part of the original game, (There is *supposed* to be a delay when jumping and you are supposed to skid when changing directions quickly) and while real buttons or a joystick would be a lot easier the game is perfectly playable as is.
You will need a lot of patience and skill to complete the game as I remember it took me about 2 months to complete the original. (my favorite level back then was level 8)
Anyone who has ever played one of the 3D versions of Prince of Persia really should check out this one to see how it all began. If Jordan Mechner's first hit game ‘Karateka’ (created on the Apple II in 1984 while he was still an undergraduate at Yale University) ever comes out be sure to check that out too.
BTW: This version appears to be a port from the Macintosh version which had the very best sound and graphics of all the versions I ever played.
Don't think about it, just BUY this game!
Not much better
In the latest update the controls were "improved". However I think the developers misinterpreted the numerous complaints about the original controls.
The update has larger buttons in a layout that almost makes sense but they are still slow and unresponsive, making the gameplay incredibly frustrating.
I've never been more disappointed in an app purchase.
