Not an SRS
I certainly think that app is a great start, but now that's I've had some time to really use it, I think there are some severe shortcomings.
I think the biggest drawback to this program is that it is does not use a spaced repition system (SRS). SRS are designed to maximize the efficiency at which you learn by showing you cards you have more trouble with more often, and then showing them less often as you learn them. At first I thought this app was an SRS, probably because of the way it mentions "Reviewing the Kanji" which does use a SRS. I have more cards in my "Right once" box than my "Right none" box and I haven't seen a single card from the "Right onc" box, only "Right none". I'm worried that by the time I get all the cards into box one I will have forgotten some of the cards I have learned.
No doubt they have done a lot right with this app, but I think the lack of an SRS severely detracts from it's value compared to other programs offered to work help with Kanji. If you are going to pay for a tool, shouldn't you buy the most effective tool you can?
The app also crashes every time I try to import a CSV file. This makes it impossible for me to transfer stories between devices and and the reviewing the kanji website. I have a iPhone 3GS and a 3rd gen iPod touch. This is what I've based my rating on.
I have some ideas for future updates:
When I write my stories I put the primitive words in caps, so I can identify them quickly (even though they're listed). It would be nice if I could bold or italicize the key words.
I like the fact that you have writing practice. One thing that I think really helps when reviewing is to actually try to write the kanji instead of just vizualizing it. It would be great if there was a button on the flashcards during review that brought up a drawing screen, so you could practice writing it before checking the answer. I think this is one of the great advantages of working with a touchscreen device.
other than one issue, overall a great help
being that all of the helpful stuff about this app is already stated in the product description, i will just comment on the one shortcoming - the app does not contain the added 196 kanji that are part of the newest 6th edition of the book. other than that, this application is a great help when working with the heisig method.
Awesome if you're serious about learning the kanji!
I recommend this to anyone who truly wants to learn kanji. Within a few days of using this app, I have learned much from it. If you plan on living in Japan in the future, then this app is a must to use to study before you go. The approach to teaching kanji is very unique.
