Superb
This one really took me by surprise. I've just completed the game and I must say it's easily one of the best games on the app store. Amazing graphics, a well composed and authentic score, with quite a good story to boot (told through well illustrated comic book style vignettes - think Max Payne). And the controls really pay off once you figure out how it's done. There's nothing quite landing a three hit combo that concludes with your enemy splitting into two pieces as blood gushes on the screen. Oh yes, this game is violent. There's a main story mode that takes about 3-5 hours to complete your first time through, and a survival-like Dojo mode, where you battle increasingly difficult waves of enemies in an arena. Overall, there's plenty of content. You'll most likely enjoy playing through the main game more than once - considering the gameplay is so enjoyable.
The visuals aren't done justice in the screenshots here. In motion, it really shines. Everything is 3D in a cel shaded style, and the levels have a so much color and visual depth with lots of buildings, plants, and objects fleshing out the environments. The animations are very convincing and realistic. There are around seven different levels and each has a unique design. There's certainly no shortage of beautiful scenery here.
The variety extends to the enemies, who come wearing different colored clothes and with varying degrees of skill. They mostly stand there towards the beginning, but quickly get more difficult. And I really must commend this game for having some excellent fight mechanics. There's a great deal of strategy involved as the enemies realistically dodge and counter your attacks. There's a dozen or so combos to use throughout the game, during which you can be particularly vulnerable if your timing isn't right.
The fight controls are fantastic. When your near and facing an enemy, you become 'locked on' and are free to attack by swiping your finger across the screen. Left swipe swings left, right to the right, and swiping up is an overhead blow. Combos are built from these gestures. It's very simple and intuitive. All the fighting feels very natural and balanced. After a while you won't even think about your finger darting across the screen. Well timed blows often result in the bloody decapitation or dismemberment of your enemy. I can't emphasize enough just how awesome this really is.
Movement is handled by simply touching wherever you want to go. It works very well, and I can't imagine how anyone would prefer the fake joysticks so many games use. The developers obviously spent a lot of time refining the controls.
Overall, this is definitely $3 well spent. If you're at all interested, just buy it. I don't see how anyone could be disappointed.
Breath taking
Wonderful game; a few glitches here and there, but absolutely worth the price of admission.
The liquid sword of the iPhone
Amazing art style and nice game play with heads popping off left and right. Fans of samurai and kung fu flicks will like this. Lots of combos to master and comic book style story make this a good buy.
