I hate to be the first to say it, but....
There are some issues.
For the record, I've been playing Scrabble for decades and I believe that it is the best game ever. I've played the board game, travel version, PC, Mac, and Palm version, (my favorite).
This is a nice version, but I have a couple complaints that haven't been mentioned.
It takes 35 seconds for the game to start, show the splash screen, and get somewhere useful. 35 seconds. I just timed it, unfortunately the game crashed as soon as it started.
The drag and drop is OK, but it would be nice if you could highlight a tile and then just tap where you wanted to put it and if you tapped again the next tile in the rack would move and so on.
Otherwise it's Scrabble, and that's great!
I know that someone will say, "35 seconds isn't so bad! Quit complaining! What's the hurry?". But 35 seconds seems like a lifetime after playing the Palm version for years and getting used to instant on. No splashscreen, just throws you right back in the game.
Also, I'm playing on the original iPhone, so maybe that makes a difference. (never hacked or jailbroken as I knew this day would come and I didn't want to brick it!)
How many points for "C-R-A-S-H"?
I was surprised to find that this game malfunctions. What I meant by crash in the title is that it will enter into its beautiful loading screen displaying the name Scrabble and then freeze, making it impossible for me to use the phone until I restart it. Sometimes it lets me play for a little while before freezing, so I can honestly say that the interface and gameplay are refined and engaging. However, out of the many paid and free apps I have downloaded, this is the only one to malfunction. Hopefully, this will be sorted out soon. For a $9.99 game, and a Hasbro product no less, it should work properly.
Not ready for Prime Time
When switching from the Treo to the iPhone last year, the only thing I lamented was the loss of the Scrabble game. I was so excited to see that EA has created this timeless game for the iPhone. However, it falls way short of the power and ease of use of Scrabble for the Treo. If they can update and include the following, it will be great.
1. There is no way to name the players. I would like to write the player names rather than looking at "1","2","3" and "4". When returning to a game after a few days, it's nice to know who's who.
2. We need to be able to save games. Currently, if I'm playing against the iPhone and want to start a new game against my wife, I have to abandon my game. I want the ability to save unlimited numbers of games.
3. We need a true tournament mode. I want to put down a word and not be told it's not acceptable, but instead have my opponent(s) challenge it. Currently, we can't even bluff.
4. I would like to look up words that are on the board. If my opponent puts down a word that was accepted, and I want to learn about it, I should be able to select it and see it's definition.
5. The game takes way to long to load. It seems that EA is very fond of their cool 3D graphics. All I want to do is select the game and start playing. Now, if the phone rings, I take the call and have to wait 30 seconds for the game to go through it's startup graphics/loading.
6. The game occasionally crashes. Of course, that's very annoying since I have to keep waiting for the long graphics in #5 to load.
7. I need to see the potential points of a word as I am building it. Currently. it only shows you the points after you create the word. I would like to quickly compare words and see which have the most points.
8. Once a word is down, the point value of the tiles are removed. I would like to see the point values for letters that are already on the board. Perhaps a roll over would display the points.
9. When starting up a game, tiles should always be hidden in case the person holding the iPhone is the opponent. It should be clear which player's tiles are about to be displayed. (see Item #1 above).
Otherwise, I'm suffering through these deficiencies simply because I'm a Scrabble addict, but hope EA takes these feature requests on for an update.
