Great metroidvania tradition
Shantae is an extremely polished genre piece that follows right in the footsteps of 16-bit golden age series, like Metroid, Mega Man, Mario World, and Castlevania, with the whimsy of Zelda on top. If you grew up loving any of those games, if you enjoy exploring, backtracking, and acrobatics, this is right up your alley. It did take a bit to get going, but once you're in the forest and first labyrinth you can't quit. It was probably a mistake to not leave the forest in the free part, it gets fun quick there. With the amount I spend every year on platformers that I'm routinely disappointed with, I wish I could give every penny to this game.
I'm so freaking addicted it's not even funny. It looks fantastic on iPad, very polished 16-bit graphics, very well tested gameplay, and a ton of music inspired by old RPGs, made by virt of all people! For only 2.99 this is a complete no-brainer, since it was $12 on DS, buy now.
My only problem is actually that the game is a little too easy. I wish there was a hard mode to remove some of the save points and vials - but I grew up with unforgiving games that skewed my perception somewhat and made me a masochist for challenge. You'll love it, no matter how skilled you are, it's just that awesome.
Classic 32-Bit Gaming
This game is a wonderful homage to the 32-bit Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis era. Fun (if not goofy story), great controls and colorful art style.
Deep gameplay and hours of content will entertain for a longtime. So many impressive aspects to this game, really takes me back to the hours upon hours I spent playing games like Donkey Kong Country and Castlevania style platformers back on the SNES.
For a free-to-try download you have nothing to lose, you'll gladly pay for the rest of the adventure, I did and it's money well spent!
Seems really fun so far but...
I tried to pay for the full version and it's still acting like I haven't paid. It asked me for my password several times and now I don't know if it went through and took the money or not. ?
Edit: I was charged for the full version but never received it. ): If I can actually get the full version or a refund I would change this one-star rating. Please fix this! ):
