Description

People are using Simplenote to keep notes, lists, ideas and more. Your notes automatically synchronize with your computer and all your devices. It's extremely easy to use. For those who want more power, you can also use tags, pins, versions, and sharing.

The best way to learn about Simplenote is to try it. After you download it, you'll be asked to create an account. This allows your notes to synchronize with your computer.

After you sign up, try creating some notes! Then use your computer to sign in at simplenoteapp.com. All your notes appear there, too. Changes you make will synchronize back and forth automatically.

You can also use Simplenote with other devices. Check out our Downloads page for a complete list of products that work with Simplenote.

The free version of Simplenote slides a small, high quality ad to the top of your note list. If you like Simplenote, but you don't like ads, you can subscribe to Simplenote Premium. Going Premium also gives you some extra goodies.

Thanks for trying Simplenote. Send us an email if you have any suggestions for improvement:

Much better than Notes

After having lots of problems with Apple's Notes (bad syncing, notes disappearing) I switched to Simplenote. It's a major improvement. I will never use Apple's Notes again.

Simplenote doesn't sync to your computer. It backs up your notes (wirelessly) to the Simplenote website. The app prompts you to set a username and password -- this takes seconds. Once you do that, you can retrieve your note files from the web. You can also edit your notes in the browser, and your changes will sync BACK to the iPhone or iPad. I've already done it, and it's a snap.

Simplenote includes ads. They're small and don't get in your way. Which is good, since turning them off has become very expensive -- $19.99 per year. (That's right: per year.) Even though it's free, two things seem a little off: that this page doesn't show the ads in the screen shots, and that it still shows an "ad-removal" option for $4.99, something that hasn't been offered in years. If you're okay with using adware, and you don't mind the quick registration process, you've got yourself a sleek, streamlined note-taking app for zero dollars.

As for the negatives, there is no in-page search. You have to search all your notes for the word you're looking for. Hard to believe, but it's true. That wouldn't be a big deal if it worked properly. But the search function is buggy to the point of being broken.

The yellow box that spotlights the word often doesn't show up, and hitting "next" usually does nothing -- it doesn't take you to the next appearance of the word, even when it's obviously there. The developers said they were aware of this bug in 2010, but there's still no real fix 14 updates later.

So, to recap: you have to register, but it's fast and easy -- and lets you retrieve your notes from the web. You have to look at ads, but they're small. Search is somewhere between buggy and broken. Otherwise a solid, totally free app that I use many times a day.

Wonderful for Writing Across Devices

I have been using Simplenote for several years, and for allowing me to work on notes seamlessly on three devices -- Mac, iPhone, and iPad -- it is a lot more effective than any other program I know including iCloud and Dropbox. Those programs do have the virtue of letting you sync more complex documents (such as, for example, Pages documents with their hyperlinks) and, in the case of Dropbox, you can sync folders with documents and their hyperlinks. But in return for this functionality, you need to go from the cloud folder to the underlying program in order to edit. In Simplenote you simply edit within the program. So, for example, if you are working on a book proposal, you can begin on your Mac or PC, continue on your iPad, and, say, edit the note and expand it while waiting in line at the grocery store. Thus, Simplenote is with you, ready to go to work in an instant whenever you have a new idea.

Far More than Expected

Love the fact that this program can be sync'd with Scrivener- a fantastic document creation program. It can be sync in other ways as well. Love its simplicity, clean user interface, and power for searching, categorizing, organizing, and exporting.
