Decent vertical shooter but not the best there is to offer
There was some hype at launch time around Sky Force being the best vertical shooter available, and so I did a comparison with another shooter Sentry Alpha. Sentry Alpha is arguably considered by many to be the best shooter currently available in the iTunes store. Visually, Sky Force is a tour de force when it comes to the 3D graphics even though the game is a straight port from 2004 so here are my experiences along with comments on gameplay.
Sky Force
* Touch control to guide your ship which for me was ok but not great; tends to lag
* Heavy duty graphics (you can see the shadows from buildings and enemy ships)
* The battlefield is what you see on the screen
* Variety of enemy ships, tanks and turrets all visually very detailed
* Weapons include torpedoes and a limited use laser
* Objective is to shoot a minimum % of enemies at each stage (gauge in the upper right hand corner monitors progress); if you don’t, you have to start the level over again, which can be kind of annoying even if you can survive the level relatively unscathed
* Collect stars and save humans for additional points
* Statistics page shows how many enemies destroyed and whether you completed the level
* One nice feature is the ability to choose your own ship which can give you a slow ship with good shields, normal speed with normal shields, or fast speed with poor shields
Sentry Alpha
* Accelerometer control only to guide your ship; personally, the accelerometer is the best I’ve played with
* Graphics are more simplistic compared to those found in Sky Force
* The battlefield expands meaning the screen moves so you can move further left or further right; actually a bigger screen to play with than in Sky Force
* Variety of enemy ships and turrets not overwhelmingly detailed
* Objective is to defeat the boss before progressing to the next level
* Collect medals for additional points
* Statistics pages shows enemies destroyed out of the total and medals collected
* One nice feature is the storyline and while it’s not deep, it provides at least some background
When I evaluate shooters, I follow this simple rule: controls make or break a game. Overall, Sky Force is an entertaining shooter, but honestly the touch controls, while decent, are not as smooth as I would've expected. I actually find the touch controls in another shooter Sky Thunder to be better, and that's a straight port as well. In addition, the objectives in each game are different. Sky Force is about destroying a certain percentage of enemies at each level, while Sentry Alpha follows the typical shooter title where the objective is to survive the onslaught to get to the boss. As mentioned, Sky Force is a port, and I don't feel like it's optimized for the the iPhone/iPod Touch platform as much as it can be. Most of my 4-star review is based mainly on the detailed graphics used in the game since the gameplay doesn't do anything to differentiate it from other shooters. Personally, Sentry Alpha still retains the crown at this stage and while others will disagree, I hope this at least gives everyone an idea of what to expect.
Great But....
I love this game but a few options should of been added with the update like the option to have tilt or touch controls and a landscape option (which I think the landscape will work better with the tilt controls) other than that I love this game and I recommend it highly.
Best Vertical Shooter!
This is a great game hands down! Although I would like to see a landscape mode as well as more levels added. Would not mind if there was an upgrade charge for new levels but make new planes, backgrounds and cannons as old screens get a little old after a while. It would add such replay value to one of my favorite games!
