Description

SKY & TELESCOPE HOT PRODUCT FOR 2012! MACWORLD 2010 BEST OF SHOW WINNER!

Spaceflight has never been so easy! Summer 2012 brings spectacular solar system events, like a solar eclipse and the transit of Venus. With SkySafari 3 Plus, you can follow them in Earth's sky - or from anywhere else in the Solar System!

As just reviewed in The Mac Observer, SkySafari 3 is "the best of all the star chart apps for iOS":

Sky & Telescope magazine says SkySafari 3 is "revolutionary" and a "game-changer":

SkySafari 3 comes in three versions. SkySafari 3 Plus adds a hugely expanded database, wired or wireless telescope control - and the ability to fly into orbit around other objects in our Solar System - to our basic version.

SkySafari 3 Plus shows you 2.5 million stars, and 31,000 deep sky objects - including the entire NGC/IC catalog. It shows the Solar System's major planets and moons using NASA spacecraft imagery, and includes over 4,000 asteroids, comets, and satellites with updateable orbits. It can point your GoTo or "Push-To" telescope anywhere in the sky, using your iPhone/iPad/iPod's built-in WiFi, and our SkyFi or SkyWire serial accessories.

SkySafari 3 accurately shows you the sky from any place on Earth, at any time up to one million years in the past or future. It includes 1100 encyclopedic descriptions of the constellations, stars, and planets written by professional astronomers. And it contains over 800 images from NASA space missions, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the world's foremost astro-photographers.

If you have an iPhone/iPad with a compass, or an iPod Touch with a gyroscope, SkySafari Plus can help you identify stars and planets by holding your phone next to them. Tap the Compass/Gyro button (or shake your phone) to activate the compass - now, as you move the phone around, the sky chart follows your motion. Search for any object in the sky, and follow the arrow on screen to find it!

SkySafari has a "Night" button to preserve your dark adaptation as you're exploring the night sky. The Time Flow feature lets you animate the night sky using simple VCR controls - follow the motion of the stars and planets as SkySafari compresses days, months, and years into a few seconds.

SkySafari 3 includes SkyWeek - the mobile version of Sky & Telescope Magazine's super-popular "Sky at a Glance" column. SkyWeek features interactive sky charts for each day of the week, and links to more articles on S&T's website. SkyWeek shows you all major sky events: eclipses, conjunctions, good meteor showers — miss nothing!

SkySafari's streamlined user interface puts the universe at your fingertips - and turns your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch into a 21st-century telescope controller. SkySafari is your celestial travel guide!

What's New in Version 3.5

1) You can now orbit other objects in the solar system! Select an object, then tap the new Orbit button in the toolbar to fly into orbit around it. If you select the Sun or any other star, you will fly far above the Sun, where you can see the whole solar system. Once in orbit, swipe to move around. New buttons in the lower left and right corners let you fly toward or away from the planet. When you're ready to return to Earth, tap the Home icon at the bottom of the sky chart.

2) A new Moon map is based on imagery from NASA's 2009 Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. When viewing from Earth, Moon is always shown as a disk with its correct phase. The Moon's dark side now shows faint earthshine, and appears sky-colored in daylight. The sky darkens when solar eclipses take place.

3) You now see the surfaces of Venus, Earth, and Titan without atmospheres or clouds. Mars's moons Phobos and Deimos are now shaped realistically. Saturn's moon Hyperion tumbles chaotically. Venus - or any other planet - now always shows as a black dot when transiting the Sun. Planet surface grids are drawn more accurately.

4) Planet and moon surface features are now labelled. So are the landing sites of every spacecraft that humankind has ever sent to any other moon or planet.

5) Object Info descriptions for the planets and constellations have been rewritten. Learn about the mythology of the planets, the transit of Venus, and total solar eclipses!

6) Object Info data now shows angular separation between the currently selected object and the Sun, the previously-selected object, and the chart center. Object Info also shows opposition, conjunction, eclipse, and transit dates for solar system objects, as well as their apparent motion rates in the sky. Physical ephemeris data are shown for planets and moons.

7) Asteroid, comet, and satellite orbits have been updated with the latest 2012 data. You can now show orbits of asteroids, comets, and satellites if you select them. Numerous other small solar system computation and graphics bugs are fixed.

8) You can now search for objects by typing a number without any catalog prefix. Searching for "104" will now find Messier 104, NGC 104, star HR 104, and asteroid (104) Klymene.

9) If you turned on the compass by tilting the phone up toward the sky, it now stays on until you lower it more than 30 degrees below the horizon. When connected to a telescope, tilting the phone will never activate the compass. A three-finger vertical swipe now zooms the display in and out.

10) You can now use the chart center as the telescope alignment/GoTo target by tapping the target label in the scope control panel. This lets you enter and GoTo to the exact set of coordinates of the chart center, or align on a point like the zenith (+90 altitude).

11) Improved app icon and splash screen.

The Best of the Best

The best keeps getting better. There are loads of star observation apps, but only one reigns supreme, Sky Safari.

Great!

Upgraded from SkySafari 3. What a wise decision! Keeps getting better and better! Keep up the great work!

great program but...

did anyone else's custom observing list get wiped out by about 50% with the recent update. Think this has happened before. With the price of this program, this should NOT happen. Other than that frustration, it is a great program.
