MACWORLD 2010 BEST OF SHOW WINNER!
NOW SUPPORTS iOS 4/iPHONE 4!
SkyVoyager is our "Pro" iPhone astronomy app - if you are a beginner, or looking for something simpler, you might want to check out SkyGazer, our "Lite" version.
SkyVoyager is a powerful astronomy program, with a database of 300,000 stars and 30,000 deep sky objects. It renders the planets and moons in detail, using NASA mission imagery.
SkyVoyager includes an Expansion Pack with 2.5 million stars, and more than 300 color deep sky object images, dramatically increasing the realism and usefulness of your sky charts. This is an optional $5 in-app purchase, available in the Settings.
SkyVoyager is a planetarium that precisely shows the sky from any location on Earth, at any time in the past or future. It contains informative descriptions of the planets, stars, and constellations; and includes hundreds of images from both NASA and leading astro-photographers.
If you have an iPhone 3G S with a compass, SkyVoyager can show you the sky in same the direction that you're holding your phone. Shake the phone to activate its compass and/or accelerometer - now you can identify stars and planets by holding your phone next to them! You can find any object in the sky by following an arrow that points in its direction. (Go to Settings -> Coordinates to enable Compass support.)
SkyVoyager contains interface themes that let you change the look-and-feel of the app, including a much-improved "Night Vision" theme that preserves your dark adaption as you're exploring the night sky.
The Time Flow feature lets you animate the night sky using simple VCR controls. Follow the motion of the stars and planets as SkyVoyager compresses days, months, and years into a few seconds.
If you have a computer-controlled telescope, SkyVoyager can use your iPhone or iPod's WiFi to point it in the sky. SkyVoyager's simple user interface, and its ability to wirelessly control your scope, make it an invaluable tool for exploring the heavens.
Carina Software has licensed SkyVoyager to Orion Telescopes and Binoculars for separate distribution on the app store under the name StarSeek. Support questions for StarSeek should be sent to Orion Telescopes. Carina Software will continue to support, maintain, and develop SkyVoyager in the future.
What's New In Version 1.7
1. SkyVoyager now supports iOS 4, and multitasks properly.
2. SkyVoyager now supports the high resolution "Retina" display on the iPhone 4. Graphic optimizations speed up drawing of the sky chart by nearly 100% in some cases.
3. Increased maximum FOV width to 185 degrees by using a new Sterographic-Gnomonic projection. SkyVoyager can now show you the whole sky at once.
4. All views now operate in Landscape as well as Portrait mode. There is a new option to show the toolbar in the main sky chart view in Landscape mode.
5. Fixed problems with SkyVoyager not reading the iPhone/iPad compass properly. We reccommend using the compass in Landscape mode; the compass hardware seems to work more reliably in that orientation.
6. When moving or zooming the sky chart, SkyVoyager now shows both the chart center coordinates and field of view width x height at the top of the chart, simultaneously.
7. New Formats settings let you control how the time, date, and celestial coordinates are displayed.
8. Changed the default theme to Onyx.
9. For Takahashi telescope mounts, SkyVoyager now automatically determines whether the scope is on the E/W side of the mount when the user aligns on a star.
10. Revised some constellation, star and deep sky descriptions. Added rotational parameters for Hyperion and Nereid. Removed duplicate labels for Thor's Helmet and NGC 5846.
11. Asteroids, comets, satellites, and other solar system objects too small to appear as disks are now drawn as brighter "stars", making them significantly more visible.
Customer Reviews
The #1 astronomy app in the store
These guys keep improving the app in ways I hadn't even thought of and it was already the best of its kind (by far) when I got it last year. Get the expansion pack, it's totally worth it.
Awesome - reinvigorated my love for astronomy.
My 2nd favorite app for the iPad (sorry, Flipboard is #1)! Amazingly fluid and easy to use, with great images and descriptions. Highly recommended as both a fun, informative distraction and as a serious tool to use while observing with a telescope.
Version 1.7 Crashes on iPhone 3G
Before the latest update I would have rated this app 5 stars but now I give it two. Reason is...I hit he icon, the main screen showing what the app comes up; then it hangs for a long time and crashes. Sometimes if I try over and over again it will open. Not good. When it does function properly it is a five star astronomy tool.
