Needs Work... A Lot
I've played this game for easily 100 hours. I've had ample time to evaluate the good, as well the bad.
The Good
- Attractive, clean interface.
- Lots of practice problems.
- Challenging openings against AI.
- Ability to review and annotate games
- Undo feature
The Bad
- Bugs - game annotations stopped showing up after about 100 games - no more little icons to see which games I've already reviewed
- The practice problems are freely available online, it's hard to give them too much credit for that
- AI just goes way too far downhill in the later parts of the game. No matter how badly you've lost, just keep placing stones, the AI will let you take the entire board
- Game scoring is exceptionally poor. AI has little ability to evaluate life and death, and hardly any concept of seki. There's no way to correct the score, like in many other go games.
- Two most important moves, pass and resign, can't be undone. You have no idea how frustrating it is to win the entire board then accidentally hit resign. Equally frustrating to win the entire board, pass, only to find the AI mis-evaluates life/death and declares that you've lost.
- No ability to add text annotations to games, only simple good move/bad move markers.
Overall -
If this game was 2.99, five stars, hands down. At 12.99, I expect, at the very least, the bugs and interface to be fixed, but for the entire time I've had the game, there have been no updates, and it doesn't look like any are coming. 1 star.
Solid
I don't normally buy apps that are so expensive. SmartGo pro has given me at least 35 hours of practice, with no hint of running short on challenges. I haven't even scratched the surface of what it has to offer!
Required app for Go players
I love this app! It offers an enormous variety of features, everything you would want in a database of go problems and games. I do wish it wasn't so cumbersome to switch between sections (my games, pro games, problems, etc), but hopefully that will be improved in the future.
