Description

Whether you are a chemist, biologist or student, no one likes the calculations needed before making chemical solutions. Solutions is the solution, and it's fun too!

LOWER PRICE | To celebrate the launch of our new website you can now temporarily get Solutions for iPhone and iPod touch for the price of only $0.99

How many grams of caffeine do you need to make a 1 molar coffee solution? What's the molarity of water? In what volume do I have to dissolve 10 grams of glucose for my next experiment? Never before it was so easy, and no mistakes either. Solutions tells you straight away.

And did we tell already that it puts two complete chemical databases in your pocket?

FEATURES
- intuitive and easy to use user interface to calculate volume, weight, and molarity of chemical solutions.
- simply enter a chemical formula and Solutions calculates its Molecular Weight instantly
- or even easier, look up the Molecular Weight of almost any chemical using the built-in PubChem and Chebi database search engines.
- and Solutions helps you to keep track of which chemicals you used previously as well.

Perfect fit

Solutions does exactly what it promises:
* calculate the weight of your chemicals or the molarity of your solutions
* amazingly simple and fast connection to chemical databases (something probably worth the price in itself)
* remembers your 'favorite' chemicals for the next time
* clean, simple, straightforward UI

Very Good - But Missing a Critical Feature

Being an Organic Chemistry student (among other BioChem classes) I immediately saw the value of this app. Particularly for all of my labs and lab reports. As shown in the picture, this app has three top lines along with one bold “answer” line below. You first enter the Molecular Weight of your compound in one of two ways – either by directly typing in your numbers (in 0000.00 – 9999.99 g/mol format), or if you click the blue arrow you are given the menu choice of Recently Used, Search Online (by far the most helpful feature of this program) and Enter Formula. Recently Used pulls up a screen of your recently searched for compounds showing a picture of the chemical structure (with color functional groups), the chemical name, chemical formula and molecular weight. If you entered your own formula (in the C8H10N4O2 format with a place for an optional name) you will just have the information you entered in the Recently Used screen. The most helpful feature of this app as noted before is the ability to search the online databases of either Chebi (the European database) or PubChem (the American database). You can then either click the row containing your desired compound to auto-populate the molecular weight field in the app or click on the blue arrow to be taken to the database page containing lots of other info on your compound. You then enter your two knowns into the next two fields (either Mass, Molarity or Volume) and solve for your third unknown. You select your unknown by touching the bold “answer” bar and selecting from the three choices. You can also choose either base, milli-, micro- or nano- units for any field. Also of note is the animation in the background of bubbles slowly rising in the blue liquid – a very nice touch.

However, there is one VERY big oversight in this app. You cannot use density (found either from the chemical database included or Wikipedia) and volume to find molarity. This is something I use all the time. I sincerely hope that this is addressed in a soon to be found update. It would also be nice to include an auto-populate field for density like the one for the molecular weight. This should not stop you from getting this app though, as I am sure this issue will be fixed since it seems like such an obvious oversight, and many applications do not require density to find molarity. The developer did a very good job on this version 1.0 product and I can only expect good things to come.

Reviewed Version 1.0 on 11/5/08 selling for $2.99.

And just as a frustrated side note – I have just now finally learned to type my Apple App reviews in Word so that I will quit accidentally deleting my long, completed reviews by clicking out of the text area and clicking back in to correct something, only to have the automatically highlighted text overwritten and erased with no undo feature…

Needs some updates

This application does what it states. It calculates molarity from different inputs.

However, I would expect an Application titled Solutions would also calculate the following solutions:
Normal solutions (equiv/L)
Molal solutions (mole solute/kg)
Volume/volume (v/v)
Weight/weight (wt/wt)
Weight/volume (wt/volume)
Per cent volume/100 mL and weight/100 mL
Ppm and other, ppb etc
Mole fraction (moles solute/total moles)

Any chance of an upgrade for those of us who already purchased this app?

Thanks for the consideration.
