Database is still incomplete...
What gives? This thing is supposes to be an interface to a complete database with pictures. The data (however sparse it may be) is there, but the pictures are mostly missing. This spoils the effect of what otherwise may be a cool app.
Still incomplete
I absolutely love the look of the app and all the fun sounds it makes. But, the love ends there. I tried to use this as a reference for an episode of Next Generation, but it doesn't list episodes by number and season. Why would it list every Star Trek episode in alphabetical order?! That is completely useless. I didn't know the title of the episode, and it took me a bit until I found the search function (which is small and hidden in a corner). Lame. It took me much too long to find information that I could have found in much less time on Memory Alpha.
As a fun and functional reference, I give this app one star. But, the style of the app is really neat, so I suppose it goes up to 3 stars. I'd really like a major update to allow search of information by show and season. Extra info like blueprints would be a neat addition if brought up to speed by CBS (since they technically aren't canon). Good start, but it could be better.
Review of Star Trek PADD
Here are some thoughts on Star Trek PADD...
Presentation: The graphic interface is wonderful. Looking at how the information is presented in this app is like looking at a small touch interface console in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Touching various functional buttons gives a nice functional response. However, touching a non-functional button or surface can be annoying if you're one who is prone to being annoyed by repetitive sound effects (but that's what "mute" is for ;) ). Also, for the entries, while it is nice to be able to see an image or two of what is being talked about, it would be nice if we could zoom in on the image (a.k.a full screen) as well.
Information/Database: The database contained for this pad seems to touch on a lot of people, species, technology, and ships. However, there seems to be a need to add more information to the database. It would also be nice if there could be a picture for all entries that are in the database. You can expect an image (or several) if the topic you are looking up is popular (like "Enterprise", for example). However, if you look up a topic that is not as popular, it may have only one image, or none at all.
Episode Guide: I made a special section just to address the episode guide. While it is nice to have a complete alphabetical listing of all of the episodes in Star Trek, it's not sufficient to do just that. There should be other ways to sort the episodes out such as by series and season, by air-date, and by overall Star Trek timeline ("Enterprise" episodes first, Original Series episodes next, Original Cast Movies, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, then Voyager and seed in the Next Generation movies where they fit timeline-wise).
Overall this is a good app, but there is always room for improvement.
