Description

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening. Since 2003, over 50,000 everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and on our Listen pages.

The StoryCorps iPhone App streams the latest clip and other selected favorites from StoryCorps.org. Use our app to share a StoryCorps story with your friends and family via email, Facebook and Twitter, or to get tips and generate a list of great questions for your next do-it-yourself interview.

The heart of StoryCorps is the conversation between two people who are important to each other: a son asking his mother about her childhood, an immigrant telling his friend about coming to America, or a couple reminiscing on their 50th wedding anniversary. By helping people to connect, and to talk about the questions that matter, the StoryCorps experience is powerful and sometimes even life-changing.

Our goal is to make that experience accessible to all, and find new ways to inspire people to record and preserve the stories of someone important to them. Just as powerful is the experience of listening. Whenever people listen to these stories, they hear the courage, humor, trials and triumphs of an incredible range of voices.

“By listening closely to one another, we can help illuminate the true character of this nation reminding us all just how precious each day can be and how truly great it is to be alive." -Dave Isay, Founder, StoryCorps

I LOVE LOVE Story Corps

Every time I hear StoryCorps on NPR I cheer- It's an amazing testiment to the human experience and should be manditory listening for everyone- It's a beautiful way to send your day- your hour, your minute, your life. Astounding! Two minute stories that have changed my life- that I carry with me- that have asked me to, no, MADE me acknowledge what an astounding connection we all share. Thanks StoryCorps...

Beautiful, though maybe not what you expect

StoryCorps is an absolutely brilliant idea, and this application is fun, but it might not be what you think. First, you have a very limited number of stories that you can listen to via the app, with new one(s?) being added weekly. I blew through these stories in one sitting (in part because they're so good).

Also, these stories are not from regular users of the app but from those who have recorded their stories at StoryCorps studios, which are also the only ones that get stored at the Library of Congress.

The "Interview" feature directs you to voice recording apps that you can then use to record a conversation, but, again, this is all just for your own entertainment – you can't share it directly with StoryCorps, other users, or the Library of Congress. You must go to the studio, either brick-and-mortar or mobile in an RV, for any of that.

But as a limited story listening application and an inspiration to record your family's and friends' great stories for your own archives, it's a winner.

Good start!

Since Communications Intern '10, Wesley Chen, introduced me to his very exciting workplace this summer, I downloaded the application. Must say the idea is incredible, and since the app is only a week old, all I can say GREAT START.
