Good start
I am a huge RTS fan, and jumped on this one as soon as it was launched. At this point I'd say it's a 3-star game, but I'd love to be able to come back here and edit this review if the developer can make some changes.
1. Navigation is a chore. The game really needs a better way to view different areas of the map. Maybe a two-finger drag/slide? Pinch to zoom?
2. Building placement preview.
3. Alt-commands. Maybe a two/three finger tap when units are selected?
4. Resource gathering (rather than just having capturable buildings which generate huge amounts of resources instantaneously).
Anyway, a great start - I hope to see this app updated to address at least the navigation issues, soon.
Awesome game but can improve
This the best game for the iPhone in my opinion but there are some stuff you can improve on.
1. Add infantry troops and sell them for cheap prices. Maybe make some of them better and some with larger firing ranges
2. Add more ships and Aircraft
3. Have more of a story mode where we can choose a country
4. Have different terrains, not just a desert-like
5. Make us gather resources rather than just capturing a building
This game is way under-rated, worth much more
I HOPE THE DEVELOPER WILL MAKE THIS GAME $7.99 AND THE NEXT UPDATE $2.99 TO GET RID OF ALL THE TIRE THUMPERS AND WHINERS.
I play on a 32 GB 2G iPT, sys. 2.2. I am not in any way connected with the developer. However, the developer is responsive to suggestions. I know improvements in vers. 1.3 are the result of suggestions from players. So, go to the website and send an email if you have a suggestion.
TO ALL NEW PLAYERS:
Everything about this game takes a little time.
You won't just pick it up and start winning. This game is FAST.
Once you understand the basics: how to make money, build forces, select forces, AND move forces around the field you will start to win.
Once you start to win you won't want to do anything but play this game.
Every level will require you to refine your understanding of the basics.
SOME OF MY SOLUTIONS:
I don’t EVER have trouble with crashes since vers 1.3. I don’t know if the developers fixed something or if the fact that everytime I close an app on my iPT I hold the home button until the app closes is helping. I have heard that doing this clears the memory in the same way that with older Macs (pre-system 7) had to have their finders periodically rebuilt. (You children out there probably don’t have a clue what I am talking about, but that’s ok.) In the future, if you get crashes with Strategic Assault, start the app, then hold the home button until the app closes, then restart. This takes about 10-15 seconds. If you have whined about crashes and if this helps, go back and update your review.
If you are new, or if you hate the radar screen, listen up. Using the radar screen is the quickest way to get a look at a distant part of the field. But you have to learn how to use it. You touch, hold and then slide slowly and deliberately. If you just touch you don’t always look at the right place. Then you have to touch again. And you're still not there. So you touch again. And then you start to think the problem is with the radar screen. But you are wrong. It is how you are using the radar screen that is the problem. Touch, hold a short little moment while you look at the vicinity screen, and then slide your finger slowly where you want to look. If you, the player, will learn to use the radar screen correctly you will find it is the quickest way to get the vicinity screen to show you what you want to see.
To the whiners, SHUT UP! If you don’t like this game, don’t leave a bad review. Admit that you’re not good enough to figure it out and go get Blue Skies (the Lite version is free, and the full is a buck). It will be your speed, I promise. If you don’t like the graphics, I ask you, what the heck do you expect for two bucks (or 8 bucks) and a screen the size of a buiness card? Personally, I don’t want photographically realistic graphics.
NOTES TO NEW AND OLD PLAYERS:
All levels at normal difficulty are "winnable." Level 11 took me about 100 tries. The third to the last try lasted 4 hours. Two tries later I won level 11. Level 12 took three tries. I have tried Level 13 about 65 tries. It seems impossible, but I know it is winnable. Replaying levels gives stats.
Do not be put off by the reviews that say the game is too hard or that movement and control are poor. Considering the limitations of playing on a screen not much bigger than a business card the radar screen/vicinity screen layout works great. I agree it is frustrating sometimes. But when you're in command in a real war you don't get to see everything that all your forces see. So when you touch the radar screen you don't always get the exact place you want to see on the vicinity screen. I have my method for solving this (see above). You will find yours.
Some reviewers say their forces wander around aimlessly. It is not the AI in the game. The players have caused this and they are not aware of what they have done. I had this same problem until I figured out what I was doing to cause this. This no longer happens for me.
I like the game's balance (balance is the game developers’ concept of keeping the game hard enough for the player to keep coming back but not so hard that the player gives up). And I like the way the balance changes at different levels. That is, the difficulty doesn't follow a straight line. And this is the same as my experience in the military. Command at some ranks is more challenging than at others. Promotion from one lower rank to the next may be a struggle, then the next rank you will skip over with ease. Strat. Assault seems to mimic this. I skipped through level 9 in one go. But took about 50 to beat the machine at 8. I am a Major now (I've beaten 10) and have lost about 80 tries at 11. One night I fought once for about an hour trying to win level 11. And I lost.
TO THE DEVELOPER:
Don’t make the game easier. Each time I lose, while I feel frustrated, I think to myself, "What should I have done differently?" This is the sign of good balance. I don't think the machine was wrong to win. This game gives a lot of variability so when I lose I think about what I will do differently next time.
MAKE THE GAME COST MORE!
Additional variability will keep the game interesting. But don't try to make like army forces. That will clutter the field. I think the "idea" of personel is contained in the APC equipment. Airfields with planes would be a good addition, as others have said.
Allowing players to send thier stats to an online bulliten board will create a community of users.
Vers. 1.3. has the following improvements:
1. The buttons are easier to use.
2. The radar screen shows opposing forces better.
3. No crashes with this version.
4. When you are going to build a stationary item the screen highlights to show where the item may be placed. This improvement may have been prompted by a suggestion made earlier. This indicates, I think, that either the developers are using and thinking about the game, or they are responding to users, or both. Either way, that's a good thing.
