Don

I spent hours creating a custom map in Google Maps for my upcoming vacation to Paris. In Cartographer I was hoping to find an app that would allow me to import that map to my iPhone and walk around with it as I visited Paris. I could look and see what else on my to-do list was nearby and that way pick a restaurant, a patisserie or other activity.

I used a wide variety of icons--not only different colors but also different shapes. On my Google Map I could look at an icon and immediately tell if a pin was a restaurant or a museum or a park or…. The variety of the icons is important. And useful.

When I imported my map into Cartographer the icons are transformed into Cartographers antique set and immediately I am disappointed. The colors are all muted/desaturated and the icons now look too much like each other. I now have to look very closely to tell which icon is which. All the colors are very washed out. And, the icons cover up a whole lot more than the Google icons because Cartographer has put them all on these little tab thingees. So, while the Google Map icon had just a picnic table for example, Cartographer has a picnic table on a bigger tab. So, it's covering up a whole lot more of the map.

Plus, the edges of the screen (on all four sides) are vignetted. I'm all for being artsy, but the iPhone screen is small to begin with. It really makes no sense to further minimize the amount of screen real estate by vignetting approximately ¼ inch on all four sides. Here art is interfering with function.

I'm going to keep looking for a new app. This isn't the one that is going to work for me. Too bad. Wish I had my $3.99 back.
