Just one complaint
After one complete playthrough I can say that this game is a blast. There's quite a bit to do, lots of paths to choose, and each of the mini games are pretty fun. I do have one complaint though, and that is the constant loading. The loading times are pretty quick, but it seems like every minute or two you're waiting 10 seconds or so for it to load the next piece. It gets irritating. If the loading could be cut down this would be a five star game. As it stands it's tons of fun and easily worth $6
Old school fan? You'll hate it. New school fan? You'd be an idiot to love it.
Firstly, I should note that I played multiple versions of this game across a number of different Mac stations throughout my childhood. I have unbelievably fond memories of this game. I'm sure that I played through this games many dozens (and perhaps hundreds) of times as a young person.
Anyway, I played through Gameloft's version of Oregon Trail on 'Normal' a couple of days ago. It probably took me a total of about two hours (if I had to guess). It has been a couple of years since I last played OT on my old Mac, but I believe that this is a bit longer than the old game's standard length. At the end of my journey, I arrived with all of my family members, with my wagon and family in good condition. There were a couple of close calls, but nothing particularly scary. Too easy.
Also, the minigames are game-breakingly easy. I succeeded at every minigame, every tme, without it ever (even once!) approaching moderately challenging. I was hoping that the games would get harder toward the end, but they never did. Super disappointing.
At the end of the game, I was totally shocked and disappointed that it didn't give me a little score breakdown (listing the multipliers, etc). My favorite part of playing Oregon Trail as a child was trying to beat my old high scores. Without a bit more transparency regarding how the scoring works, I'm afraid that I'm going to quickly lose the desire to re-play the game.
So, after this super-negative experience, I decided to try the game on 'Hard' mode. Unfortunately, my negative thoughts were only reinforced. 'Hard' mode was actually much easier than 'Normal' mode, because I was more familiar with the (very few) tricks and nuances. I ran through the game on 'Hard', I achieved the top star-rank at each checkpoint, I never had my family's status drop below 'Good', I won every single minigame, etc. It was super boring, super easy, and totally a waste of my time. So, for the few of you who were hoping that 'Hard' mode would make things better: it doesn't. If anything, it is worse.
If you loved the old game, please be warned that they have stolen every single ounce of fun. There is no more micromanagement. (Want to decide how many bullets to bring? Forget about it.) There is no more challenge. (If you can't press the berries as they show up on screen, you might as well go to sleep in the tub.) Everything has been taken. There is no fun for the old-school fan to be had here.
If you are not a huge fan of OT, then it would be pointless to start here. This game is brutal. My god, it is terrible.
Worth it? ... not really.
When I bought this Oregon trail game I figured that it would have some of the same features of previous versions, but I was wrong.
1. There is absolutely no buying of individual commodities, If you wanted a bag of oats to feed your oxen, too bad there is no such thing. If you wanted to buy chickens for your family to eat when times get rough, don't want your party to have 2 adults and 3 little kids, too bad, if you really wanted to celebrate fourth of july, too bad, if you actually wanted to buy individual bottles of medicine before everyone gets sick, too bad, want to actually buy a fishing rod and a shotgun, too bad, everything I had expected too do, TOO BAD!
2. It does not show you the health of individual party members.
3. There are only forts not trading posts or towns.
4. Minigames are so easy it is painful.
5. At every river you can pan for gold and make a ton of money... I don't know about you but I certainly can't find 10 pounds of gold in the Mississippi River!
6. Meat and supplies that's it. you have no idea how much you have or really what they are. Really Gameloft... LAME!
7.Load times are long and very very very frequent. They also show the same "Oregon Trail Tips" every time.
8. Eagles and snakes that eat children?
9.When you are in the mountains you have no idea because the game shows a flat desert.
10. If you buy one of the like 10 items in the general store it equips it but there is no screen showing what you have, nothing nada.
11. You have no choice of where you start.
12. I was in the mountains in march and there was no snow on the ground, it looked like a flat desert.
13. Your guy is the last one to die no matter what You don't even get sick unless everyone else is dead.
14. I was in the middle of nowhere and there was a guy with a little stand that said fishing challenge $5.
15. I cannot tell the difference between wagons.
16. I ran my oxen at full speed for a month and they did not get tired.
17. You can't fish rivers and you can't hunt unless you get attacked by a (bear assult) of like 30 bears or you see your "wagon train captain" at the side of the road. Oh yah or you get attacked by a horde of squirrels.
18. My wagon was hit head on by a huge tornado and everything was fine.
19. The map is so darn confusing.
20. The quests are so darn confusing.
21. Learning Company plays like a 30 second video everytime you start the game.
22. Hiring help to cross a river means that this indian dude that lookes like Arnold Schwarzegger carrys your 5,000 pound wagon over his head while walking through 7 feet deep water.
23. Hunting consists of clicking squirrels and picking up their carcasses (chicken legs.)
24. TOO EASY! I beat hard in a hour.
25. NO SCORING AT THE END
26. Only one saved game is allowed.
27. I never tells you if your game is saved or not, you just have to trust that it is.
(I reccomend this game for anyone who likes pointless entertainment and random repitition of everything.)
