Description
Trails is the first GPS app that allows you to record, export AND IMPORT tracks directly on your iPhone!
O'Reilly: "Best app for hiking"
MacUp (Germany): "Best iPhone App for iPhone OS 3.0"
NYT GadgetWise: "Remember That Great Hike? My iPhone Does [with Trails]"
Record your hikes, bike trips or jogs directly on your iPhone. Easily import tracks by simply searching on popular GPS websites such as everyTrail.commapmyrun.com and bikely.com to find hikes and jogs of other users and follow their tracks on your iPhone.
You can view your recordings (live or later) on an OpenStreetMap (the Wikipedia for maps) that include a lot of additional information (such as bike trails, ski lifts, ATMs). You can switch between road and topographic maps! Maps are loaded once and then stored on your phone, so that you can view them again even without an internet connection: offline maps!
Trails is also the ONLY APP that allows you to edit your tracks with a simple tap on the map: delete and label any recorded waypoint.
You can export your tracks with two clicks in the standard GPX Format. This allows you to geotag and geocode your non-iPhone photos (via e.g. HoudahGeo) or to share your track with others via Google Earth, etc. Or upload your tracks directly to everyTrail.com or into your TrailRunner log with a single tap!
Features
- Record waypoints with altitude for multiple tracks (pause and resume as you like)
- Display your tracks OpenStreetMaps and select between road and topographic maps (that include cycle roads)
- Map cache allows you to load maps once and view them later offline (or abroad) without an internet connection.
- Edit recorded tracks on the map: name waypoints or delete unwanted ones.
- See the distance, speed and duration of your track while you record
- Import tracks from bikely.com, everytrail.com, mapmyrun.com through the easy search or import a GPX file from a URL
- No internet connection required during tracking - ideal for holidays. (Loading of maps requires Internet though).
- Export your tracks along with time stamps as GPX file, to everyTrail.com and TrailRunner (free for Mac)
- Select kilometres or miles for display of distance
Trails works best with the iPhone 3G.

Customer Reviews
worked great for me
Unlike a previous reviewer, this application worked perfectly for me. Mapping is a bit slow, but suspect this may improve in time because the developer seems really on top of things.
Due to the restrictions on the iPhone, Trails has to run in the foreground with the iPhone turned on. I haven't tried to hike long enough yet to run into battery problems, perhaps because the screen does eventually turn off without stopping tracking, you just can't press the physical sleep/on/off button on top of phone. You can listen to music or podcasts, as long as you start them before you begin tracking. But if you're tracking, and the phone rings and you answer, tracking stops. Luckily, it's easy to resume tracking once you stop talking.
Overall the application performs very well and exactly as described. I like knowing exactly how far I've walked, and having it charted on the map is surprisingly satisfying (if slow).
Also, the developer is extremely responsive to support questions and told me that he is already working on new features and improvements.
Well Worth the Money
I am not one who normally writes reviews due to time limitations; however I feel that this app is worth a good review. I have used it for motorcycle trips, to me is more efficient than to highlight the roads I took on a road map. I did run into a couple of hick-ups, BUT the developer returned e-mails and SOLVED my problem in a matter minutes (literally).
I would recommend spending the few bucks on this app, and I can’t wait to see the upgrades. Well worth the money, if in nothing else the TEC support is with it!!

Works great with my ATV
Worked correct the first time, yet user interface needs help for us in the US: the words indicate a settings menu, yet it the click for settings is missing, the altitude is in meters; feet or yards would be helpful, The developer indicates Ok to email him, yet a complete email address is no where to found either in itunes or on his web site. Also the variable settings for the waypoints alluded to, can't find them. Fix these little details and I will carry it with me when I am out in my ATV here in TUcson, AZ.
Update, My emails to the developer were returned promptly with answers to all my questions, all necessary info included in his FAQ section.
