► 148 Apps (Jennifer Allen)

As a disability aid, Voice Reader Web looks to be fantastically useful. There are other benefits to for the likes of car drivers or people who just want to relax and listen to a website rather than read huge amounts of text. Audio segments can be saved in a variety of different formats too for later consultation. It’s an all round useful app indeed.

► Hot Mac Apps

Its integrated with a safari like browser and you can have any webpage read out loud to you in a choice of 21 different languages with 32 different voices. (4/5 ★★★★☆)

► The iPhone App Review (Luke Patrick)

However, Voice Reader Web’s real godsend is its ability to read any viewable website back to the user. All one has to do is slap the audible button along the bottom, and away Voice Reader Web goes, drawling out the text in the specified voice. Speaking of voices, there are currently 32 voices in 21 languages, each of which sounds pretty decent. (4/5 ★★★★☆)

► Mac How (Jim Shaw)
Some people absorb information quicker when they hear it and others when they are multitasking. If you are one of these people then this is the app for you.

very good and useful app. I agree with some bugs at the beginning, but now it just great!
works fine. amazing good voice quality. very fast loading of the web sites in text view...
it is the exemplary application!

So-so

Too many accent mistakes in Russian. Boris voice is generally doing better then Olga.
Sometimes reads last word of a long sentence twice.
Sometimes skips text to the end of paragraph.
The more you use it the more flaws you'll find.

Works pretty well...

I bought this app as I have a competitor's Web Reader, but found it to have become unreliable, exhibiting quirkiness (eg skipping first sentences of all paragraphs! It clearly is in need of updates, as it didn't do that a year ago....).

I already have Linguatec's Voice Reader (and bought an off-line voice: that's VERY important, as both apps work better if you do). So I figured since I already had a voice (Kate, the Brit female), I thought I'd give their Web reader a spin.

I'm glad I did, as it works really well, much better than Voice Reader (PDF reader: perhaps the larger size of many PDFs accounts for it's boggy response). Like someone else mentioned above, the voice quality of Linguatec beats the competition (and even Apple's voice that's built-in to Safari with iOS 5 sounds robotish in comparison).

This app is not perfect, mind you, but it works the best of any apps in the text-to-voice category I've tried, offering great value (eg there's a $10 app, but I'm not spending that kind of money just to find out if they're better!)

Things I'd like to see added?

• it would be nice if the browser would respond to tapping of the upper menu bar like Safari, jumping to the top of the page. That would save a TON of scrolling!

• multi-tab browsing (important, if this is to be used as a replacement for Safari; it should offer at least the functionality of the native browser),

• option for auto-play after the page loads,

• As mentioned above, the ability to select where reading commences (or remember where reading left off. I know, these are not big concerns for web pages (which are smaller than 400 pg PDF files), as the app is responsive enough to tab to locate the paragraph you want, but it still would be nice...).

•PDF support (or make Voice Reader more responsive/snappier, like Voice Reader Web...)

• seems a bit of a waste of bandwidth and time for users to download 110MB of off-line voice data again (if you already bought a voice), if it already exists somewhere in the iPhone RAM?
