Good physics, horrible table

The game is a good start, but honestly after five minutes, I was so frustrated. First of all, the table is not fun. There are only a few targets to hit, and the reward for hitting them isn't much. Secondly, the lane on the right swallows your ball WAY too easy, with no way to escape. Lastly, the flippers are way too big and with the dynamic scrolling, you can't predict the line-of-sight of the ball until it's too late. So overall, I like the framerate, and it's a great start, but the table needs to be redesigned. I found that I could not make a ball last longer than a few minutes without it getting sucked down the drain. The tilt does no good either as it has no effect. As a suggestion, add a target that will regenerate the kick-back for left and right lanes, this way you can prevent loss of balls. Also, add a description of what to do in the game. It took me about 5 times before I understood how to "shoot" harry. It's just way too confusing and no instructions. Also, what is the "get mission" target for? I haven't been able to survive long enough to figure out what that even does. And "back door?" Same thing. Please make these changes and I will revise this review to 5 stars. As a last suggestion, google little-wing pinball for ideas for how to do pinball table design right.

Great app, but needs work

I picked up Wild West when it was free, so it was hard to pass up this chance to try out a pinball game.

On an iTouch 2G, the 3D graphics were impressive and the framerate never really skipped around much. The gameplay itself is pretty decent. The game starts out with a splash screen and 3D panning of the game board, with small text telling you what each part of the table does. When the game starts playing, the camera tends to follow the ball instead of giving you a view of the entire screen. This wasn't much of a problem for me, but for pinball enthusiasts I can see that it would be an issue considering that this feature makes it harder to aim.

To start the game, you use your finger to pull back the plunger. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of skill use with the plunger since the game doesn't yield you very much bonus for controlling the plunger power. Once the game is in action, the flippers are controlled by tapping the appropriate side of the screen, right half for the right flipper, left half for the left flipper.

The table itself needs a lot of work. On each side of the flippers are dead alleys that force you to lose your ball. You are saved the first time. Once your ball goes in the alley it gets shot back up, and a little gate closes so that the next time the ball falls into the alley, it gets redirected to the gutter and you lose the ball. These gates can be reset by a series of lighted panels near the "Indian village" bumpers that need to be struck thrice. While this reset feature is fine, the problem is that half of the time when the ball is ejected from these dead alleys it falls back in, causing you to lose your turn. The right dead alley will shoot up to the Indian village area, hit a bumper, which bumps it right back down the alley. This design flaw is proves frustrating and needs to be addressed.

On the right side of the table is a railroad track that provides a stream of points when you send the ball into the rails. Near the entrance, however, are three lit panels that, when struck three times, turns the railroad into a goldmine. A subsequent shot of the ball onto the rails nets the player a ton of points.

Several players have complained about the "Dirty Harry" shootout. This is a set of three lit panels on the left side of the table that, when turned on, causes a little "Harry" character to come out. A little arrow then rotates back and forth, and players tap on the side of the screen to "force" the arrow to turn in that direction. This part is mostly about timing, because although you can control the rotation of the arrow, you cannot control when the ball is going to get launched at Harry. The best method I have found is to try to keep the arrow pointing at Harry by alternately tapping back and forth until the ball is launched. Killing Harry nets the player additional bonus points.

A third feature on the table is the bank. The bank is accessed by hitting a series of 5 panels near the Indian village. Each panel, when struck, emits the sound of a cash register, so that when all 5 are struck it sounds like a cash register is ringing out. This opens up a ramp that leads the ball into an area with three bumpers, and an exit hole. The bank features three bumpers which accumulate your cash payout as each bumper is hit. Atop of the bumpers are lights that, when lit, help to multiply your cash payout. The only way to get this bonus is if your ball exits the area through a hole on the bottom right. Unfortunately, the bumpers are placed inappropriately. Half of the time when the ball gets up the ramp and into the bank area, it hits the first bumper and then gets shot right back down the ramp, causing you to lose your multiplyer and bumper bonus for the bank section. I can understand the logic, but with no way for the player to help manipulate the ball into the exit hole, it is frustrating to set up the perfect shot into the bank ramp, only to have it ejected right back out.

For a lowly priced app, it's definitely fun and helps to pass the time. But other than that it can be frustrating to play considering there's not a whole lot of skill required. Even if you do have the skill, the table layout rewards you with rejecting by spitting your ball right back out of the ramp. With updates, additional tables, and fixes to the ball physics (the ball seems as bit too light sometimes), this has the potential to be a great pinball game.

Update is weak! And still no restart???

1. Restart and Save game/ autosave
2. High scores page (not online)
4. Add another table but more exciting and with more action
5. How do we shoot Harry? I cant aim it just shoots somewhere, arent we supposed to be able to aim and shoot?

If most of these changes are made, its a 5! And if a new table (much more exciting, though) is added, then i'll give a 7!

Thanks
