Political Terms and Words in Argentina (Spanglish Playground Special Edition) | Hi! This week we have a short, kicking off the topic of the month: Elections and Electoral Systems This time we'll publish the cheat sheet right here: Radical: In Argentina, when said in Spanish, it makes reference to the second-largest political party in the country, after Peronism: the UCR, Union Civica Radical, founded in 1890, as the “Radical” (in the English sense) wing of the then-newly formed Uniòn Cìvica. Over the years, the whole party became known as “Radical”, “Radicales”, “Radicalismo”. The candidate of this party for the upcoming elections is Ricardo Alfonsin, son of late president Raul Alfonsin (1983-1989) Liberal: Not a left-winger, nor a progressive. It means “Liberal” in economics, opposed to interventionist policies, against State-ran stuff, taxes, duties. Something that in 90% of the cases, comes accompanied by politically conservative attitudes. Thus, a Liberal is a Conservative in Argentina. Neo-liberal: A Neo-con, from the point of view of someone that has a negative opinion about the following: a downsizing, cutting down social programmes, privatizing, eliminating duties, and rejecting intervention of the State in economy. Former president Carlos Menem (1989-1999) and former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori are usually attached to the word Neoliberal. Socialista: Related to the century-old Socialista Party, a moderate center-left party which has nothing to do with communism or marxism. They rule the province of Santa Fe and they are filing a candidate for the upcoming elections, the incumbent governor of Santa Fe: Hermes Binner. Comunista: A marxist party of insignificant electoral weight. Also the term its used on books and media, when refering to the Soviet Union, Cuba...is practically the same than in the US. Zurdo: Semi-slur. Literally, a left-handed person, but it can also means “Left-winger” or “Progressive” in general, said from a negative point of view. Trosco: Slur. Comes from Leo Trotsky, and it makes reference to people or groups that advocate a communist state, in which private property is abolished. Progresista: The most accepted word at present for left-winger, or progressive. Subversivo: A word used by the Military Junta to define what they considered to be their enemies. It is no longer used, and least of all in public. Conservador: Not used, for someone who is a conservative. Argentine had a Conservative Party until the 1940s. Centroderecha: The media is using this term more and more, for a right-winger, or a conservative. Gorila: A slur peronists use for anti-peronists. Chupacirios: A slur for an extremely religious (catholic) person. Facho: (Derivation of “Fascist”) A slur for someone who’s a rightwinger, specially in the political aspect: for instance anti-gay rights and/or pro iron-fist crackdown on crime and protests and/or pro-Military Junta. Peronista: Check out Episode 5 of Season 1 (The Best of the Worst Peronist Translations) We hope you liked it, if you have some questions or comments, please use: The comment box below BACast @Twitter BACast @Facebook contact@bacast.com | 4/8/11 | Gratis | Ver en iTunes |
