About Alanis Obomsawin

Although American-Canadian Abenaki artist Alanis Obomsawin is principally known for her work as a documentary maker, she also has a music career that began in 1960. Born in New Hampshire in Abenaki Territory, Obomsawin moved with her mother to the Odanak reserve in northeast Montreal where she resided until she was nine. While there, her mother's cousin taught her about the history of the Abenaki Nation including its legends and songs. She moved to Montreal in the 1950s and began singing and storytelling at schools, prisons, and on reservations. In 1971, she made her first film, Christmas at Moose Factory, which was the beginning of a long career in filmmaking that focused on issues affecting First Nation people. In addition to her films, she made her professional debut as a singer/songwriter in New York in 1960, and went on to tour America, Canada, and Europe. In 1988 she recorded the album Bush Lady, which featured traditional Abenaki songs as well as her own compositions. For years the album was out of print and thus became a rarity, but in 2017, Obomsawin performed the whole record at La Guess Who? festival in Utrecht, Netherlands. The following year, the Canadian independent label Constellation put out a remastered version of the original album with both its original artwork and liner notes, and updated artwork and liners. ~ Bekki Bemrose
