b. 31 December 1933, Winnsboro, Louisiana, USA. Carter has loved country music since he was a child and learned to play the guitar. Performing with local bands, he was signed by Conway Twitty in the late 50s. Carter played on numerous Nashville sessions during the 60s, putting his ability to improvise to good effect. He made a single for Monument Records, ‘And You Wonder Why’, in 1967. He played on records by Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Waylon Jennings and, in particular, was featured on Simon And Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’. He ran both ABC Records’ Nashville office and Nugget Records and produced Cannons In The Rain (John Stewart) and American Son (Levon Helm).
