Chocolate U.S.A.

About Chocolate U.S.A.

Formed in 1989, Chocolate U.S.A. (the band’s original name, Miss America, was changed due to a law suit) is an indie pop group that shares similarities with Elephant 6 bands like Olivia Tremor Control and Elf Power. The quintet, led by singer, guitarist, and accordionist Julian Koster, performed in their native Florida, and started the "Chocolaty Good Smash Hit of the Month Club," in which fans would receive a new song each month. Bar None Records released the band’s demo, ALL JETS ARE GONNA FALL TODAY, a primer on Chocolate U.S.A.’s quirky pop and unusual instrumentation. SMOKE MACHINE, a more polished effort, appeared in 1994. Julian Koster went on to perform in the bands Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel.
