About Among The Oak & Ash

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Handing Pete Seeger a cassette tape of one of my very first songs I'd ever written called the Haymarket Massacre and he told me he liked the title. He was playing with Sweet Honey and The Rock at a church that night and it was beautiful. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bob Dylan, New Morning Jean Ritchie, Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson At Folk City Neil Halstead, Sleeping on Roads I chose these records because I find the voices on each entirely transcendent. Jean's albums taught me about folk songs. Neil (as well as Slowdive) is one of my favorite songwriters of all time. And Bob got me started in the first place. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “New York City, New York (feat. Palface and Mo)” I lived in NYC for 22 years and this song just reminds me of my time there... it just makes me happy. I love that Paleface joined me to do it and love how we sound like old pigeons in park talking. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Opening for Billy Bragg in Austin, Texas - his music and songs mean a lot to me and it felt like one of those full circle moments. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Of course, I'm sure... Sometimes, I don't know that's something been on my bucket list until it happens. Like one time backstage the great guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel, gave me a quick lesson on a flat-picking trick.
