About Roy Montgomery

Roy Montgomery is an experimental guitarist based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Active since the 1980s, his atmospheric, primarily instrumental guitar excursions have been a significant influence on numerous post-rock, space rock, and avant-rock musicians. Following early-'90s records as part of the group Dadamah, he made his solo debut in 1995, issuing several recordings of shimmering, reverb-heavy guitar instrumentals, including the sought-after Temple IV. Collaborations such as Dissolve (with Chris Heaphy) and Hash Jar Tempo (with Bardo Pond) followed, in addition to further well-regarded solo works like 2000's The Allegory of Hearing. Following a mostly quiet 2000s, he made a split LP with Grouper in 2010 and continued issuing material throughout the decade, including the ambitious quadruple album R M H Q: Headquarters (2016) and Suffuse (2018), which included several guest vocalists. He launched another ambitious series of four LPs in 2021, starting with Island of Lost Souls.
