About Cagedbaby

b. Tom Gandey, Brighton, East Sussex, England. Born to new age style parents with an additional liking for fishing and pianos, by the age of eight Gandey could play the piano better than his music teachers at school. He began to write his own compositions, mainly classical in nature. Rather than follow his brothers into the family fishing business he began playing keyboards with various local bands. Influenced by artists as polar opposite as Toto and Talking Heads, Gandey started to experiment under the tuition of early 90s big beat artist Cut La Roc. After many hours in the studio Gandey created the Cagedbaby sound, a mixture of Prince -style future funk with former Beloved singer Jon Marsh-style vocals. Gandey then went to the Miami Dance Conference in March 2002 where he attracted the attention of DJ magazine, which at the time was writing a feature on unsigned artists. The magazine was so impressed by a demo of Gandey’s debut, Will See You Now, that they did a two-page feature on him, which became a catalyst to getting signed to Southern Fried Records. 2005 marked the official release of Will See You Now on Southern Fried with the album gaining a number of positive reviews, with leading UK music magazine Q stating ‘Possibly the finest summer/beach/picnic/chill-out record since Röyksopp’s Melody A.M. ’ Cagedbaby supported the Chemical Brothers on tour in 2005, while picking up remix commissions including Armand Van Helden, Har Mar Superstar and Ocean Colour Scene.
