Doris Duke

About Doris Duke

Not to be confused with the billionaire heiress and philanthropist who died in 1993, cult favorite soul singer Doris Duke was born Doris Curry in Sandersville, Georgia in 1945. She got her stage name from the legendary soul producer and artist Swamp Dogg (Jerry Williams, Jr.) in 1969, following three years of unsuccessful singles under the name Doris Willingham. Her 1969 debut I'M A LOSER and its 1970 follow-up A LEGEND IN HER OWN TIME were reissued in 2005 as I'M A LOSER: THE SWAMP DOGG SESSIONS AND MORE.
