About Gang Gang Dance

Cobbled from the ashes of several defunct Brooklyn-based outfits, Gang Gang Dance is a loose confederation of artists and musicians who explore a kind of modern-day tribalism through percussion-heavy, electronics-aided avant rock. Liz Bougatsos’s variously chanted and sung vocals evoke Middle Eastern sonorities as well as modern rockers like Kate Bush. The group’s live shows displayed a penchant for off-kilter improvisation, winning them accolades with fans of free-form folk and experimental music. The year 2008 saw the appearance of a video documentary for the Whitney Biennial, a prestigious survey of contemporary American art. In August 2008, the group coordinated the Brooklyn wing of “88Boadrum,” a bi-coastal concert featuring 88 drummers performing in spiral formation.
