Popnews review

I think, this review of popnews.com sums it up very well: It's hard not to compare the music of Richard Kapp, Austrian multi-instrumentalist with Divine Comedy but by starting its first album with a bunch of songs Neil Hannon hasn't written since… at least “Casanova”, we are instantaneously conquered. The vocal inflexions are staggering as is the quality of the songwriting but Richard Kapp only has at his disposal his “small personal orchestra” and he makes the best use of it without ever falling into bombast, which does not mean that the album is not perfectly arranged, quite the contrary. During the first half of the album, the rousing melodies are numerous (“The Kingdom' s Mine” which would not have been out of place on “Cannibale” from french singer Dominique Dalcan, “Goodbye, Society!” and its "ELO-like" saturated chorus) and Richard Kapp even tackles on “The Things We Love” a duet in the spirit of the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein (“The Sound Of Music”, ring a bell?) and succeeds without flinching. The second part of the album changes the mood a little and becomes more atmospheric with often rather short songs but the astonishing “Too Much Logic” (which reminds us of the complex songs but always supremely melodic of the first 10cc albums) and “Watching The Sea” (surprising but successful mixture of keyboards both atmospheric and funny, of improbable electric guitars and a dancing beat) maintain the album at a high level of quality. “A Tie for Free” is an extremely promising album which shows an astonishing mastery for a first album. If he succeeds in the future in moving away from too heavy references, it will undoubtedly be necessary to count on Richard Kapp.
