Unfairy maligned by her fans
While no masterpiece, Jewel's 0304 was unfairly described by her fans as a 'sell out', which was the last thing it was. Despite trading guitars for synthesisers, Jewel's lyrical touch is unharmed, with plenty of poetic punch in every song. In addition, there's a more overtly sexy, knowing quality to Jewel's lyrics this time around that is surprisingly appealing. "Leave the Lights On" is the most obvious case here, with the bridge being downright tingly -- Scary and sexy all at once. The greatest problem with the album is that as a dance album, it just doesn't work. Jewel's unwilling to let her voice stand aside for the beats, which is probably smart, but means you won't be shaking your booty to any of these tracks anytime soon. Nonetheless, as an album to listen to, it succeeds strongly.
