Album Review

The title and sound of 100 Miles from Memphis can’t help but recall Dusty in Memphis, Dusty Springfield’s 1969 blue-eyed soul classic, but Sheryl Crow’s 2010 album isn’t quite a strict homage to Dusty. Crow draws from many of the same ‘60s sources as Springfield, but she also dabbles in reggae (thanks to the chunky guitar of Keith Richards on “Eye to Eye”) and digs into the cool, seductive ‘70s groove of Hi, channeling Al Green on a sleek reworking of Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Sign Your Name,” complete with support from Justin Timberlake. Add to this the extended funk coda of “Roses and Moonlight,” the hippie singalong of “Long Road Home” and one of Crow’s signature good-time social-conscious raising anthems in “Say What You Want” and 100 Miles from Memphis boasts a considerably more expansive palette than Dusty in Memphis, yet it’s all bonded by its smooth, soulful groove due in part to the co-production from Doyle Bramhall II and Justin Stanley. This pair gives 100 Miles a sound that’s recognizably Southern yet has a distinctly sunny vibe not too far removed from Crow’s sun-kissed debut Tuesday Night Music Club, of which this shares a similar spirit, if not sensibility. Tuesday Night Music Club is loose and open where this is focused and sustained, maintaining its charming, relaxed groove from beginning to end. There’s an ease to this record that’s not often heard on Sheryl Crow’s albums and its light touch is thoroughly appealing.

100 Miles from Memphis and still on the right track!

When fans of Crow heard that this new album was going to have a bluesy soul tone to it, one couldn't help but imagine where she was headed. Our country/pop girl and former Michael Jackson backing singer was dithcing the easy adult contemporary tracks and heading down a new road. Turns out, she was 100 miles from Memphis and still on the right track!

Memphis has a relaxed and calm tone to it, a freeing echo that you could only assume this is where Crow must have been wanting to go for long time. As a song writer, Crow pours her heart into her songs and compared to the tone of 'Wildflower' this lets us, the listeners and fans know that she is in a good place right now.

The lead single 'Summer Day' is a breath of fresh air and just like 'Love is Free' from her last album, it lures you into a feeling of a Saturday afternoon, warm sun, sea breeze and good times ahead. 'Long Road Home' should be the stand out track off this album. It does have a slight 'Out of our Heads' feel to it but it keeps all right tricks to make it the most enjoyable track on the album.

Included are two cover songs, one that just misses it's mark, the other, spot on. The Terrance Trent D'Arby cover of 'Sign Your Name' feels slightly out of place here. Crows vocals are strong but one can't help but feel as though this tracks tone would have sat better in her previous 'Wildflower' album. The cover that is brilliant is Jackson 5's 'I want you back (For Michael With Love) a tribute cover dedicated to the man who allowed us to meet Crow. It's fun and vibrant and as close to the original as possible with even at times, Crow's vocals eerily mimic that of Michael Jacksons.

Memphis has all the right sounds to keep old Crow fans listening along and excited about where this trip to Memphis (if she ever gets there) will take us while fans of the genre should be welcoming to a new voice with open arms.

stunning.

Sheryl Crow's fresh, updated spin on classic roots rock made her one of the most popular mainstream rockers of the '90s. Her albums were loose and eclectic on the surface, yet were generally tied together by polished, professional songcraft. Crow's sunny, good-time rockers and world-weary ballads were radio staples for much of the '90s, and she was a perennial favorite at Grammy time. Although her songwriting style was firmly anchored to the rock tradition, she wasn't a slave to it — her free-associative,...
