Give it time...

This album could very easily be dismissed, and unfortunately a lot of listeners will do so - as I almost did. It's sad that we come to expect what we want and when we get something with a slightly different flavour we don't go in for a second bite.

I beg you, scoff down half the meal... It's very much the old Marling we have become comfortable with, with a side of fresh... Surprising vocal twangs and growls. This is an album that at times sounds like her happiest so far and then yanked back instantly with such sombre darkness. I love it.

Much like the album suggests, 'A Creature I Don't Know' may need more time to connect with than the past albums... Time worth giving.

Astounding

Diverse juxtaposition of eclectic, passionate songs - a pleasure to the senses

Marling's third is still steeped in the pure British folk of the first two but she's broadened her musical palette, try the light metal grind of "THe Beast" or the muscial change -up with strings in the second half of "My Friends". Even her vocal tone has changed, conversational, a whisper, a growl occasionally. Though listen to her soar occasionally, "All My Rage". Lyrically there's some bite, some disillusion, men aren't heroes in her world. There's something meaty and satisfying about "A Creature I Don't Know" (revealing title that). An enormously talented singer/songwriter. Four stars only because she might well be capable of something truly great.

Endowed with a husky voice, an acoustic guitar, and a gift for building quirky, hooky folk songs (characteristics that find her compared favorably to artists like Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, and Martha Wainwright), Marling quickly made a name for herself throughout England thanks to a heavy touring schedule and a...
