A truly great album

A wonderful return to rock and roll by R.E.M.. Stipe’s passionate vocals, Buck’s blasting guitar and Mills’ funky bass and soaring harmonies, added with Bill Rieflin’s pounding drums, all contribute to make this one of R.E.M.’s top 5 albums.

Back in Green

REM does a protest album ? who'd have thought... I love a good dose of US western self loathing as much as the next person, especially when a band as talented as REM get back to their raw garage self. Inspired and passionate, totally unexpected. Welcome back ! Now can you teach New Order to go back in time too ?

Safe. But a winner.

Ten years is too long to wait for REM to return to what they're best at. Up, Reveal and Around the Sun were non-events. All over-produced and overlong. Accelerate has REM playing where fans want. From the punked sounding 'Horse to Water' to the sheer pugnacity that is 'Living Well is the Best Revenge'. Finally REM return with a cracking album. Purhaps they were asleep over the last decade?? + Either way, be glad they've awoken.

Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
