Album Review

The early 21st century has seen a wave of female artists that seem to have been influenced by Tori Amos, but have given Amos' piano-heavy approach a much more apparent pop spin. Case in point, Brooke Fraser, and her 2008 U.S. debut, Albertine. Already quite popular in her homeland of New Zealand (where her 2003 debut, What to Do with Daylight, has spawned several hits and awards), Fraser's sound is quite similar to U.S. pop artists of the American Idol era. No doubt Fraser certainly possesses a heck of a voice (as evidenced by such tracks as "Deciphering Me"), and can also cook up tunes that should have no problem crossing over to the upper reaches of the U.S. pop charts (the slightly Norah Jones-ish "Lover, Where is Your Fire"). However, as with the majority of pop/rock acts of the modern era, there's nothing all that musically groundbreaking that would make Albertine stick out from the rest of the pack. That said, as her first domestic release, Albertine does indeed show great promise, and could certainly serve as a building block towards something special. Keep your peepers peeled.

Customer Reviews

Thought-provoking, devotional and inspirational!

Well done, Brooke! This album was definitely worth the wait! From the falsetto-esque melodiousness of Shadow Feet and Deciphering Me to the thought-provoking, social justice-inspiring Albertine (from the Hope:Rwanda Campaign) and the ever-challening Faithful, this is an honest, vulnerable, solid, faith-inspiring album from a young Christian girl who not only talks or sings about it but actually dares to live it. "Now that I have seen, I am responsible; Faith without deeds is dead" ("Albertine")... 5+++++!

Brooke

Wo. Ok, pretty stunned. This album is pretty near flawless. I enjoyed a few songs of hers previously but I never expected this from her second album at her age. She makes even Missy Higgins sounds unoriginal and weak! Tracks like 'Albertine', 'Love Is Waiting' and 'Faithful' are some of many glorious, beautiful compositions. Fraser manages to calm the listener, but challenge too - there is no other 'artistic' way to say that this is simply a sublime record. Hats off to her as this really is superb. Do yourself a favour.

Unbelievable

From what I've heard so far, this is an amazing album. I loved "What To Do With Daylight" so much that I was worried that nothing Brooke did afterwards could ever be as good - boy, was I wrong! I will definitely be buying this album and listening to it non-stop, because not only does Brooke have a beautiful voice, but she writes inspired (and inspiring) lyrics that challenge you to live your life better.
