Album Review

This lush and earthy collaboration between Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris may sound like it rose from an amiable weeklong studio session, but the 12 tracks that make up All the Roadrunning were actually recorded over the span of seven years. The boot-stomping "Red Staggerwing" and the gentle "Donkey Town," both of which were bumped from Knopfler's Sailing to Philadelphia record, give the ex-Dire Straits leader a chance to flex his country muscle, while the wistful title track spotlights the lovely Harris, whose playful demeanor and guarded confidence helps keep Knopfler in check during his sometimes excessive soloing. The two couldn't be more at odds vocally, but Knopfler's laconic drawl is like an easy chair for Harris' fluid pipes, and standout tracks like the 9/11-inspired "This Is Goodbye," the wistful "Beachcombing," and the infectious single "This Is Us" come off as effortless statements of vitality from both camps.

Customer Reviews

How good is this!

Just when I thought Mark Knopfler had nothing new up his sleeve - I should have known. An unexpected, but outstanding combination. The emotive Knopfler vocals, and his trademark guitar, combine with the wondrous talent and haunting voice of Emmylou Harris. If there is one track which sums it all up, it is the last one, "If This Is Goodbye" - it gave me goosebumps, brought a lump to my throat, and has caused me to play it over and over. Blues, country, folk rock - whatever this album is, it is brilliant.

Emmylou happy to be in dire straits

What a fantastic collaboration! This is an album to be savoured. Knopfler's voice complements the crystal clear clarity of Harris' vocals and the guitar work is as distinctive as ever without being intrusive . Overall, if you don't like this album, the ears have been shot to pieces. 'Beyond my Wildest Dreams' and 'If this is Goodbye' are personal highlights but there are so many tracks to be savoured. I love the reminiscing of the everyday experience of 'This is Us' .

Terrific Mix

I bought this album a few months ago, and can't seem to stop playing it. A terrifix mix of rock, country and easy listening. Beautifully crafted songs, an obvious nod to the talented artists. More than a touch of Dire Straits, but without taking away from the golden voice of Emmylou. It seems they were made for each other, vocally of course. If your in doubt, buy this one. It will reward you.

Though other performers sold more records and earned greater fame, few left as profound an impact on contemporary music as Emmylou Harris. Blessed with a crystalline voice, a remarkable gift for phrasing, and a restless creative spirit, she traveled a singular artistic path, proudly carrying the torch of "cosmic American music" passed down by her mentor, Gram Parsons. With the exception of only Neil Young — not surprisingly an occasional collaborator — no other mainstream star established...
