Some Good Songs

This album is going to be disappointing for those who were hoping John was going to keep going for a more bluesy-soul sound; this album is more pop then blues, more Heavier Things then Continuum.
However, It has some strong songs such as 'All we ever do is say good bye' and Taylor Swift sings a few words in a country-tuned 'Half of My Heart'. I would argue 'Who Says' is not the strongest song in this album, personally just not as capturing as a few other songs. 'Perfectly Lonely' has a nice bluesy-reggae sound with nice short guitar solo to fit. 'Assassin' and 'Do You Know Me', showcases John is not afraid to try and attempt a different sound. A short-version of 'Crossroads' has been thrown in, which was surprising, personally I would have preferred if John had used one of his own older songs instead, such as 'The Hurt" - but it seems we will have to wait till the next album for that. 'Edge of Desire' is nostalgic to previous works, minus the vocals. 'Friends, Lovers or Nothing' is my favorite, a good mixture of pop/blues and I expect this one will allow John to pull out amazing solo's when on tour.
This album does showcase John's amazing guitar skills but the guitar work is more disclosed then in 'Continuum'. I think that is perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this album - as a guitar player, notwithstanding the creative riffs and melodies, this album was missing the power of John's guitar, before John became a strong singer he was a strong guitarist. And this album, generally, hides the guitar genius behind layers of sounds.
The strength of this album is that it shows John is never limited by everyone's expectations, that he is able to create music without being restricted by his previous works. I am huge John Mayer fan and i think there are several songs that make this album quite enjoyable.
So the album is between Ok and good but i am not mesmerized as I was when i first pressed 'play' to hear 'Continuum' blast through my speakers.

another amazing album from JM!

Battle Studies is yet another exceptional album from Mr John Mayer. I had the privilage of seeing these new tracks performed live in his very special Sydney showcase show this month so I knew we were in for yet another great album and this did not dissapoint. It is different to Continuum but continues onto the next chapter perfectly. Stand out tracks are 'Perfectly Lonely, Assassin, War of My Life, Half of My Heart with Taylor Swift, Edge of Eternity and off course the single 'Who Says'. Friends Lovers or Nothing is the perfect close to the album and live shows also. If you are a fan of well written songs and emotive music then this album is for you. Do yourself a favour and purchase/listen to this album and let John Mayer take you on a journey.

I'm on fire is another great (bonus) track only available when you buy from itunes.

Looking forward to more music from John in the future!!

Good at times

There's a few nice songs, but it's disappointing considering it's been 4 years since continuum. Little short both in length and quality of songs. 'edge of desire' couldve been left out, as well as 'do you know me' which is a 3 minute time filler. But with that all said, there are some great ones. Worth the price of admission, not worth the years of waiting.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After making his introduction as a sensitive, acoustic-styled songwriter on 2001's Room for Squares, John Mayer steadily widened his approach over the subsequent years, encompassing everything from blues-rock to adult contemporary in the process. Arriving during the tail end of teen pop's heyday, he crafted pop music for a more discerning audience, spiking his songcraft with jazz chords and literate turns of phrase. The combination proved to be quite popular, as Room for Squares went triple platinum...
