Album Review
The chief appeal of this European import, a skimpy nine-song survey of Beck's late-'60s work, is the inclusion of three tracks from rare solo singles that weren't featured on the first two Jeff Beck Group albums: "Hi Ho Silver Lining," "Tallyman," and "Love Is Blue." Beck takes lead vocals on the first two of these, and though "Hi Ho Silver Lining" actually made the British Top 20, Beck and/or those around him quickly realized that a strong lead vocal presence (i.e., someone other than Beck) was in order. These are typical British pop/rock tunes of the era, but the real curiosity is "Love Is Blue," a cheesy rendition of the Paul Mauriat megasmash that sets Beck's stinging guitar against a near-Muzak arrangement.
