Album Review

After a lengthy absence, Faithfull resurfaced on this 1979 album, which took the edgy and brittle sound of punk rock and gave it a shot of studio-smooth dance rock. Faithfull's whiskey-worn vocals perfectly match the bitter and biting "Why'd Ya Do It" and revitalize John Lennon's "Working Class Hero."

Classic Albums find new audiences

There are some albums that should be in everyone's collection, and 'Broken English' is one. I bought this first as a record, then a cassette and now it's on my ipod. I think the album is as relevant today as it was in 1989. A great listen and a new audience waiting to find the true Marianne Faithfull. If you're after a mellow album to kick back to this is it.

Well, it's OK, but...

Come on, previous reviewer, this album is hardly "mellow". Nor is it that good. I too bought it in 1979 on the strength of the positive reviews in the UK music press. I still like it, but the only song that makes my iPod is "Witches' Song". "Why'd Ya Do It", notorious at the time for its explicitness, is really just plain silly (can anyone listen to it without laughing?). "Lucy Jordan" is OK, as is the title track. Artists should know better than to touch songs like "Working Class Hero", unless they have something really different in mind. Marianne's voice suits some of the songs, but on others (e.g. Guilt) is just too far gone. Amy, take note.

Few stars of the '60s have reinvented themselves as successfully as Marianne Faithfull. Coaxed into a singing career by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham in 1964, she had a big hit in both Britain and the U.S. with her debut single, the Jagger/Richards composition "As Tears Go By" (which prefaced the Stones' own version by a full year). Considerably more successful in her native land than the States, she had a series of hits in the mid-'60s that set her high, fragile voice against delicate...
