A worthly sequal to an underrated debut
White Monkey was a brilliant record that did not receive the commerical success that it deserved. The long, long wait for the follow up is well worth it.
Calling All Magicians is very much a Danielle Spencer record. It showcases her amazing song writing and heavily features her layered vocals and piano based sound. This album is more piano heavy and electronic sounding than White Monkey, but equally as catchy and addictive, just stripped back more. I wasn't in love with this record first listen, but after a few, I can tell with a little time, my love for this album will equal that of White Monkey.
What I love about this album is how Danielle has threaded themes from White Monkey into this record. Calling All Magicians (both song and album title) have subtle references to White Monkey, while Back At the Red Door references lines from Cartoon (from White Monkey) including exact lines as well. I feel that's very clever and adds to the appeal.

Danielle is an undiscovered talent, who is undeservingly known as Mrs Russell Crowe. She got a record deal before that and deserve recognition in her own right.

Excellent Follow Up To A Brilliant Album
When Danielle Spencer's debut album 'White Monkey' was released in 2001 it did not gain commercial success but did garner mass critial acclaim. Without a doubt one of my all time favorite albums. I have been waiting for many years for her follow up to be released and now we have it. The difference is a little less electronica and a little more acoustic. The amazing thing with this album is it tells a story. It is a magical fairytale that has some uplifting and haunting tracks. I did not think that anything would be able to surpass 'White Monkey' but this album has flawed me. I imported it from the UK a few months back and have not stopped listening to it. Listen to Tracks' The Broken Ones', Calling All Magicians','On Your Side' and 'Back At The Red Door' which serves as an almost sequel to the track 'Cartoon' from her debut album.
Hopefully this will gain more success that her previous effort an will give her a more recognizable name. A True Australia tallent.
A stunning Australian singer/songwriter
The wait was definitely worthwhile - Danielle Spencer's 2001 "White Monkey" just left us all wanting more, and "Calling All Magicians" delivers, including subtle yet poignant connections back to "White Monkey", such as the echoing storylines of "Cartoon" (White Monkey) and "Back at the Red Door" (Calling All Magicians).
With an amazing voice, detailed musicality and a unique blend of singing, spoken and story telling, Danielle Spencer should step up into the spotlight as one of Australia's most dynamic and innovative artists. In some ways, I see her as an Australian Tori Amos or Regina Spektor.
This is an album made for good quality headphones to faithfully pick up Spencer's detailed harmonic accompaniments - and here's hoping Album 3 is less than 9 years away.
