Album Review

Catch the Wind: Songs of a Generation is a quite peculiar follow-up to Damien Leith's proper debut album, 2007's Where We Land, and unfortunately it goes a long way towards erasing the praise he received for that album, one of the better debuts by a winner of a television singing contest. Leith — who was born in 1976 — sings as if he has no personal connection to the songs, and given most of the songs here, that's not a surprise. The portentous subtitle leads one to expect a set of generational anthems, but aside from a pair of protest tunes each by Bob Dylan and Donovan (all of them delivered in a heavy-handed, subtlety-free fashion), the 18-track set is far more heavily tilted in favor of soft rock singer/songwriter types like Cat Stevens, Bread, John Denver, Peter Frampton, and Jim Croce. [The CD was also released with a bonus track.]

Stunning

Damien has a voice form heaven. This collection is fantastic, as is Damien's interpretation of them. These are not just 'covers' they are song from the heart. It is clear these titles all have a special place in Damien's life - how else could they be treated so well. Highly recommended. Enjoy!

So much better than I expected!

I wasn't too happy to hear that Damien was doing a genre covers album like so many aussie artists seem to do these days, but more than happy on actually listening to it! The acoustic feel and stripped back arrangements really highlight his beautiful voice, and his inclusion of the Choir of Hard Knocks on two of the tracks is quite inspired. I'm not of this generation, so its been a wonderful discovery listening to all these classic songs! And the bonus track is a pleasant surprise too.

Gorgeous!

This album of classic covers from Damien has incredibly beautiful moments that show his voice and interpretative genius off to the max. He has chosen songs that he obviously relates to and sings with heart. Listen to the sexy Baby I love Your Way, the beautiful tones of Longer and Sunshine On my Shoulders, the wonderful melding of voices with The Choir Of Hard Knocks on Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and you'll get the idea. Highly recommended.
