Album Review

Native American activist and singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie makes an incredible comeback on this recording after 16 years away from the studio. Busting all myths about dippy folkies, Sainte-Marie takes on the still-hot topic of Indian oppression while exploring sonic ground that is completely unexpected: programmed keyboards with Laurie Anderson-style voice-over ("The Priests of the Golden Bull"). The entire work is a hard-hitting condemnation of corporate greed and dirty politics, masked in new-agey sounds — about as subversive as it gets.

Customer Reviews

Buffy is timeless

I lost touch with Buffy's music after the 60s and bought this album out of sentimentality more than anything else, without any great expectations. In my opinion it's her best work. The Big Ones Get Away, Starwalker, Goodnight - lyrically perfect, and perfect of lyric. Anyone who has ever loved, or even just vaguely liked, Buffy will not be disappointed.

Her songs that addressed the plight of the Native American, particularly "Now That the Buffalo's Gone" and "My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying," were the ones that generated the most controversy....
