Pretty Wicked Little Album
In a genre where there is no shortage of artists The Temper Trap have managed to avoid creating a record that fails to distinguish itself from the masses and consequentially loses its appeal quickly and becomes resigned to the occasional listen on shuffle. What this Melbourne born, London based band have created is a 'beautiful' and bittersweet album which really resonates through not only through the pure vocals, which appeal to both those who have a penchant for contemporary alternative rock singing, and those more attune to classically sweet vocals, but also through the often simple but sonically superb guitar riffs and wonderful backup singing. Initially I thought it would be virtually impossible for an alternative rock album to trump Phoenix's 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix' as the best release of the genre in 2009 however The Temper Trap are giving them a run for their money. I highly recommend this album to anyone who listens to music in genres ranging from pop/rock right through to the most alternative of rock if not for the love of the album but for the wonderful example of how to make a good album that stands out, doesn't deviate too far from the norm so that it limits itself in terms of an audience and has a marketable sound that has potentially limitless commercial potential. Best song of the album is a close call but I would have to award it to Sweet Disposition: A Truly AMAZING song.
I like it, but it's a little over-produced
I really dig this band. I've heard them live a couple of times and I really enjoyed the sound. I like the album, but what stopped me giving it a higher score was that I was disappointed with the mix and production. When I've seen them live, the instruments come together nicely to create a great lush sound, and Doug's voice floats over it all beautifully. The album version of these tracks has seen changes in the mixing so that, for example in Sweet Disposition, that U2-y guitar during the verse is too buried. Doug's voice loses a bit of it's magic after being run through various filters and effects. The backing vocals get pushed way back as well, losing that lushness I mentioned earlier. Of course, I heard the live music first, so that's the impression I have and liked. People coming fresh to the album will hopefully love it, regardless of my grumpy bits and pieces.
This made one Melburnian very proud
What can I say that I haven't said before in real-life? Nothing much I guess, so I'll go for it anyway. I've known of The Temper Trap for a while, but this album is truly amazing. Not just 'great' as the rating stars have me say, but amazing. From the opening track Love Lost with it's tidy beat and powerful chorus; to the end track Drum Song that lacks Dougy's incredible vocals but is nonetheless a fantastic example of an instrumental song. The standout though, in my opinion, is definitely Soldier On. It's underrated by many, but the way that a slow and almost tranquil song can end in such a mesmerising way is one reason why I admire the band. Fader, despite it's mainstream success, is actually the song I prefer least, probably because it strays furthest from an indie sound. Nevertheless, this album is not one you will ever regret listening to. Cheers.
