Album Review
Cripple Crow marks a departure for Devendra Banhart. It's obvious from the faux Sgt. Pepper-meets-Incredible String Band freak scene cover photo that something is afoot. The disc is Banhart's first foray from Michael Gira's Young God label, and it's more adventurous than anything he's done before. This is not to imply that the set is a slick, over-produced affair, but it is a significant change. The instrumental, stylistic, and textural range on this 23-song set is considerably wider than it's been in the past. Working with Noah Georgeson and Thom Monahan, a backing band of friends known as "the Hairy Fairies", Banhart's crafted something expansive, colorful, and perhaps even accessible to a wider array of listeners. There are layered vocals and choruses of backing singers, as well as piano and flutes on the gorgeous "I Heard Somebody Say," while the electric guitar and drums fuelling "Long Haired Child," with its reverb-drenched backing vocals, is primitive, percussive, and dark. There is also the 21st century psychedelic jug band stomp of the second single, "I Feel Just Like a Child," that crosses the nursery rhyme melodics of Mississippi John Hurt with the naughty boy swagger of Marc Bolan. There are also five songs in Spanish, Banhart's native tongue, in a style that's a cross between flamenco and son. The title cut, "Cripple Crow," is one of the most haunting anti-war songs around. In it, Banhart places a new generation in the firing line, and urges them to resist not with violence, but with pacifistic refusal. A lone acoustic guitar, hand drums, a backing chorus, and a lilting, muted flute all sift in with one another to weave a song that feels more like a prayer. The lone cover here, of Simon Diaz's "Luna de Margaerita," drips with the rawest kind of emotion. Ultimately, Cripple Crow is a roughly stitched tapestry; it is rich, varied, wild, irreverent, simple, and utterly joyous to listen to.

Genuinely good; patience and non-exertion required
Any Google search on Devendra reveals a cornucopia of nut-jobs with praise ad-nauseam for the guy, this album, and everything he’s ever touched. Is this praise worthy? What would I know? I’m not a singer/songwriter fan. The reason I was interested in this album was persistent references to “psychedelic folk”. That sounded interesting. There are elements of psychedelia present but honestly I think this guy should take more drugs. Basically Devendra Banhart is cleverly picked acoustic guitar, a variety of percussion, a bit of piano, oh - and a silky voice. If that’s your idea of music then this one’s for you. The simple arrangements emphasise Devendra’s strength; his voice and his simple song arrangements. Maybe it’s just me but I hear a similarity to Sufjan. The main difference between the two being that Sufjan has a LOT more horns. And strings. Devendra is way more mellow. In fact, upon reflection they’re quite different but I think the fan base of the two artists would be similar. Non-fans may be interested to learn there’s quite a Spanish influence on Cripple Crow. Probably not, I admit, but there’s a possibility of interest there. It’s difficult to pick out highlights of the album. Cripple Crow is consistently good if nothing immediately attention grabbing. I really like the instrumental Sawkill River and I’ll not single out any other songs for particular praise. A small criticism is that the album gets a little boring to these ears, but it will reward patient listeners who are not looking for an edge to their music.
Pipe Dream
In the past I have found something to like - occasionally something to love - in every Devandra Banhart record but "Cripple Crow" is the first one which has been not only consistently good, but also manages to find a coherent structure through which to summon his idealistic if somewhat melancholy muse. This is a record from the edge of a universe which feels somewhat out of reach; yes, a hippie dream but beautiful and surprisingly relevant. Those who want muscle and aggression in their music will probably hate this (except for, maybe, "Chinese Children") so only dip in if you are looking for words and music that express longing and outsider desire. The Spanish songs are lovely, the lyric are smart and funny; the whole record convinces that Banhart and his band have developed as both songwriters and musicians. There are still some annoying "doodlings", little nonsense songs that sound like filler to this ear, but overall this is a very fine record. Listening to it you do believe, just for a minute, that a word not ruled by the dark lords is possible.
Highly original
This highly original album plays across several styles and themes, even a glance at the song titles would show this originality. This makes it not immediately accessible so definitely worth more than just a look!
