Album Review
Go was the most satisfying of Mario's first three albums, but it lacked a major crossover single on the level of "Let Me Love You." Although the sensitive ballad "Crying Out for Me" was big on R&B stations, it did not break the Top 30 of the Hot 100. The minimal Sean Garrett and Shondrae production "Break Up," however — D.N.A.'s lead single, issued weeks before the album — did not take long to become the singer's biggest pop hit since his breakthrough. And it does turn out to be his fourth album's greatest deviation from the back catalog, carrying a laggard and sparse pulse to back Mario's whiny swagger. "Get Out" is a close second, a buzzing and grinding production from Jim Jonson and Rico Love that mirrors the song's theme of emotional entrapment. One of the hardest beats Mario has had at his disposal, it pushes him into that tough guy mode (as heard occasionally in Go) where you can sense him forcing his jaw to tighten and his eyes to bug out: "This ain't real, so what the f*ck is we doin'?" Even with several new collaborators, including some of the aforementioned, Babyface, Carlos McKinney, the-Dream, and Tricky Stewart, D.N.A. is more a natural development than a series of drastic shifts, and while it will please the majority of the fan base, the material does not allow Mario — a vocalist more versatile than many would like to admit — to do much more than toggle between a Lothario and a softie.
Customer Reviews
Mario is back with another amazing album!!!
Every album he has released tells a story...with the album "Go!" showed how much he has grown, showing his sensual and sexy side...it was noticably a love-making album. With this album titled "D.N.A." simply taking the title for the reason of re-introducing himself to the world...to new fans and old fans. This time he has stepped outside the box to produce an album filled with songs with the combination of pop and r&b...good examples would be the songs like "Thinkin' About You", "Soundtrack To My Broken Heart" and "I Miss My Friend". Besides his previous album "Go!" being a sexual project showing his grown and sexy side, this album, however, is noticably his "break-up" album with him telling a much deeper more personal side of him with situations experiencing lost relationships, heartache and emotional problems. ANd that is something daring especially for a young man. Showimg a more sensitive side is what Mario is really depicted in this album. With the song like "The Hardest Moment" being the most sensitive track on the whole album...with deeper feelings. There is also the track "Get Out" having the same meaning but with a different, more bitter vide to it...why not? we all go through mood swings during break ups and heartache true? Lets not forget the track "Starlight" for bringing a pop-ish "michael jackson" feel to the album, kind of has a electric euro-pop feel to it also...would be an awesome club banger!
I like Chris brown and all, but I reckon he is too caught up in this world, selling out to new trends of music...he has gone from a song like "Run It" to a song like "Forever"? And I really like those songs, just I don't understand why not alot of people take Mario to be a serious artist...even though he stepped outside the box on this album and triend new things he still stays humble and doesn't rely on features with rappers like Kanye, Lil' Wayne etc. Making it on his own in the world, showing how grown he is and not scared to express a deeper side of himself unlike alot of R&B male atrists out there are too proud of themselves and they reckon they are all pimp. There are some serious lyrics behind the album "D.N.A." and it should do very well, but unfortunately not laot of people recognize that. Goodluck Mario you are one of the best!!
Worth the listen
Mario is back with his new offering and having thought Go! was a masterpiece with track for track a killa effort- I have to say that with only a few listens D.N.A doesn't have that appeal (Track for Track). Mario's best work on this CD is his midtempo tracks Thinkin Of You (A single off the album), Soundtrack To My Broken Heart, Don't Walk Away and I Choose You. I am hoping this C.D takes a few listens because Mario's music is always worth the download. If you are wanting to get the best of Mario download GO! then come back for this one. I will always buy Mario's work its that simple
Finally!
All in all, definately a 10 out of 10. Mario always surprises me! Just when i think his albums can't get any better he comes out with D.N.A! ever since his last album was about a month old i couldn't wait for his next one to come out!! Now that it is here and i've memorised all his lyrics :p its a defanite MUST HAVE!! go and buy it, you wont be disappointed!! cant wait for his next one?!! lol
