Album Review

The anthemic indie rock sound of Snow Patrol provides a bit of hope and promise among the many acts attempting to fit into a certain genre or scene. Snow Patrol belongs to their own scene, and their third album, 2004's Final Straw, proved that with several global hit singles such as "Run," "Chocolate," "How to Be Dead," and the reissue of "Spitting Games." British fans once more proclaimed their beloved Snow Patrol as a true rock & roll band while American audiences finally took notice of the Scottish collective. The band's fourth album, Eyes Open, doesn't fall short from where they left off; in fact, Snow Patrol's hungry rock sound only gets bigger and better this time around. All guitar hooks and singalong choruses are firmly in place, and Gary Lightbody is an underrated frontman. On Eyes Open, he once again writes songs that are from the heart and true to self-reflection without getting too sappy and too overjoyed. From the playful name-dropping of Sufjan Stevens on "Hands Open" to their passionate delivery on "It's Beginning to Get to Me" and "Shut Your Eyes," Snow Patrol's approach is epic. They are the kind of band that embraces simplicity as beautiful and human flaws as art. The lullaby-like "You Could Be Happy" and the passionate buildup of "Make This Go on Forever" are evident of that. This 11-song set is a masterpiece, so keep your ears and eyes open for Snow Patrol. They're onto something big.

A Ripper

Eyes Open finds Snow Patrol charting somewhat different sonic territory to Final Straw. While there is still plenty of energetic guitar, there are some pared-backed songs where Lightbody's voice occupies the foreground. Strings, piano, xylophone and a choir augment some of the quieter moments. There is a beauty and coherence that runs through the album. You're All I Have has 'hit' written all over it. Other highlights are the melancholy gentleness of You Could Be Happy, and Set the Fire to the Third Bar with Martha Wainwright helping out on vocals. Eyes Open will please existing fans of Lightbody's brand of melodic and intelligent guitar based rock, and will enlist some new supporters to the cause. It's a little ripper of an album; quite possibly the Album of the Year for my money.

Nice... =)

This is an interesting album for me. I'm a big coldplay fan and found this album by accident and started listening to a few of their songs. I thing i enjoyed it because it has a striking resemblance to that of coldplay. Overall, a good album. Worth the buy...

After failing to secure an international audience for nearly ten years, Snow Patrol broke into the mainstream with 2003's Final Straw, a mega-selling album that showcased the band's fondness for epic, melancholic rock. The group had originally stuck closer to the pop realm, releasing quirky albums that took more cues from Belle & Sebastian than Coldplay (to whom the band would later draw many comparisons). Final Straw proved to be a turning point, however, paving...
