Cant beat the originals!

I would Prefer to listen to the originals of these songs!

Disappointing

This smacks to me of knocking out an album with little or no passion, just to honour a recording contract. Compared to other recent Santana (eg Supernatural) this is very dull. It is basically a bunch of session musicians playing "rock standards" with Santana playing an overly twiddly solo (and his guitar sounds the same on most tracks) over the top (and obviously brought to the very front of the mix). His take on Smoke on the Water is appalling. Most of the tracks are uninspiring and add nothing to the original (taking away from the riginal in most cases in my opinion). Love Santana, but hate this.

GUITAR HEAVEN

This is one of the best albums I have heard for years. The song choice is brilliant & Santana's guest singers do an excellent job interpreting these guitar classics.

What budding guitarist has not learned "Smoke on the Water" or the "Whole Lotta Love" riff? Hear them played by Carlos Santana & the songs take on a new dimension. I have been a Santana fan for years & have never heard him play with such dazzling technique. But it's not just his technique.....it is his tone, feel & touch. Every note has Carlos' signature all over it. From perfectly executed unison bends, to the growl of Santana's wah-wah pedal, the album is a textbook for all guitar players.

Standout performances are delivered by artists as diverse as Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), India Arie, Rob Thomas & Joe Cocker. However make no mistake......Santana completely dominates this album with his unique sound. It's hard to pick a standout track but "Whole Lotta Love" with Cornell's wicked vocals is a show stopper.

Hendrix is acknowledged by the inclusion of "Little Wing", which is sung by Joe Cocker. One of the best versions I have heard. Check the blues licks that are played over "I ain't Superstitious".......some of the best I have heard.

This album is essential for any lover of rock music.

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel...
