Album Review

Joanna Newsom uses Have One on Me's two-hour spread to travel from Appalachian folk to big-city pop, with stops at country, soul, and gospel along the way. It’s a dense journey, not just as a whole, but from song to song. Over 11 minutes, “Have One on Me” begins with jazzy harp stylings and some of Newsom’s most polished vocals, returns to Milk-Eyed Mender’s rural whimsy, passes through a marching band, and lands in a British folk reverie. “Kingfisher,” a chamber pop fantasia that plays like a condensed version of Ys, "'81"'s winsome country-pop, and the dazzlingly beautiful “Go Long” are other standouts. At its best, Have One on Me is an impressive album with the intimacy of a live performance.

Just... whoa

i dont say this lightly....

best album of the year?

decade?

ever?

its definitely up there. simply stunning.

Magnum Opus!

'Have One On Me' could be considered Newsom's magnum opus; and not just because of its 2-hour running time. It is because unlike any other Joanna Newsom album, she exposes herself allowing her listners to get to know her personally. Where her previous album 'Ys' (brilliant in its own right) contained deep, metaphorical storytelling backed by orchestral arrangements, 'Have One On Me' is like conversations and whispers between you and Newsom herself with both her harp and the piano. Her songs persoannly effect you and leave you with unique and untangable feelings. Though not as intricate as 'Ys', or as energetic as 'The Milk-Eyed Mender', 'Have One On Me' shows us how songs which demonstrate the soul of their singer are songs which stay with their listners forever.

This is the best album of any genre I have heard in decades.

The fans who have followed Joanna Newsom's musical evolution over the years will be deeply rewarded for the MASTERPIECE she has produced this time.
"Wow !"
Those new to her work take your time to get to know her and it is unlikely you will regret it this chick is something out of the ordinary!
Take the time to listen to her preceding works too then you will really appreciate her .
Is she the best harp player in the world ? (Best I have ever heard)
I always thought of the harp as a mawkish sickly instrument. But Newsom plays it like it should be played - SOULFULLY.
Her voice unusual, yet so melodic it washes over you and is so soothing.
"Have One On Me " is the kind of music I have wanted to listen to my whole life. It's like evry cell in my body is calm and content when I sit painting and listening to these tracks
Of course Newsom expands upon her past with her piano effort on this project(loved it!)
What is especially pleasing about this large collection of songs is that there is not a single song that is not a wonderful, wonderful feast for the ears.
My advice is do not listen to the whole play list in one sitting, take your time, about 4 songs at a time is my limit. Like any great body of music performed by any prodigious talent you will simply overdose.
I call her a musical genius of the modern age who transcends genres of music to reveal one common source, spiritual in nature!
Admitedly I get perplexed by her lyrics ,which are the personal thoughts of her intellectual mind, she does have a brain, but her esoteric poetry concerning family, friends and other mother nature,so beautiful and playful at timers leave me curious too curious!
A sweet angel who shines her light,it would be ignomious of me to compare the work track ,her Joanna Newsom's music track by track, but lets just say by "Good Intentions Paving Company" you are scaling Mount Everest and reaching for the stratosphere ,and by Kingfisher, you are still up at Himalaya-type altitude!

SUGGESTION -BUY IT -ENJOY IT!

Biography

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s

Although Joanna Newsom's Appalachian-meets-avant-garde take on folk music is her most celebrated work, her range is even more inclusive than her solo career suggests: the classically trained harpist adds a decidedly different, textural sound to Nervous Cop, the noise rock trio that also features Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and Hella's Zach Hill, and she also plays keyboards for the Pleased, another San Francisco-area band more akin to Blondie or Television than her other projects. Like her resume, Newsom's...
