Album Review
If the Drones have grown a touch more polished and focused with time, it's not at the expense of creating compelling music — if anything, Havilah even more clearly places the band as one of Australia's best rock bands ever, something that goes beyond the clear twang in the voice of Gareth Liddiard right from the start of "Nail It Down," the album's dramatic start. With guitars moving from the understatedly tuneful to sweepingly angry without losing the pace, it suggests Havilah will be nearly all brawl, but instead it takes a generally calmer turn, Liddiard's voice front and center even as the band artfully and alternately arranges itself around the singing and then bursts forth on the breaks. Even that doesn't always happen, though, with "Penumbra" essentially being the Drones unplugged, the calm guitars touched with a distant wail at the song's end sounding like a lost soul. Songs like "The Drifting Housewife," its delicacy marked by bells and building strings even as the lyrics meditate on identity and social expectations, and the tense "Careful as You Go" show that even as the Drones sound less overtly frenetic they still exude a sense of unsettled threat, suggesting the build to a final fierce resolution rather than necessarily reaching it. If nothing else, some of the opening lyrics to "Oh My" show that the band's contrarian spirit is far from dead: "People are a waste of food....they're only happy when they're burying their friends."

Oh My
The power and vitriol pour forth from the Drones 4th or 5th album (depending on how one classifies the Millers Daughter) and it continues the trend of powerful songs from Gareth Liddiard, more Australian poet than anything. The Drones music is more than anything an Australian narrative, it is Tim Winton, Paul Kelly and the Triffids sucked through a blender and spurted out as a Nick Cave nightmare over the Australian outback canvas. The Minotaur, Cold and Sober and Oh My are highlights from one of the best albums of the year. The Drones may well end up as one of those great neglected tragedies, i know i will buy every album. It isn't everyones cup of tea but the savagery and tenderness deserves a place in every Australian music fans heart
Pure Drones
The Drones are back with album number four and its fair to say Havilah will be another critical sucess.. The Drones have a fast growing reputation as one od this countrys most important bands. Another strong release in Havilah, here comes the world. Opening track Nail It Down is a spiralling/disjointed number showcasing The Drones abillity to use the loud/soft dynamic. After a couple of listens it is a real highlight. Next up is the single The Minotaur is a spooky yet driving number that would not be out of place on any other Drones release. Songs such as The Drifting Housewife, Carefull As You Go and Cold and Sober show a rare softer even more meaningful side that fans of Tom Waits or Nick Cave would love. Luck In Odd Numbers is the standout of the record. A brooding, slow burning beast all eight and a half minutes of it!! A masterpiece!! Havilah is a must have for 08 for any real fan of Australian music. A once in a generation band. Bigger thing await The Drones.....
Darkly Poetic
The Drones have produced a stellar effort here with their new LP "Havilah". It's epic, beautiful, and darkly poetic, as you will find with the Tom Waites-esque "The Minotaur" and "Cold and Sober". The final track, "Your Acting's Like the End of the World" sends this fantastic record out with a bang, and you will not regret getting this. Highly recommended. 4/5
