this is the best album ever
i love this album i am playing jupiter in band it is such a lovely peice
Holst is a genius
If you like classical music... this is truly a masterpiece. Holst has captured intriguing music, very worthy of the classical genre. This is an extremley good deal for sensational music.
better interpretations elsewhere!
i have to say i was very dissapointed with colin davis's performance atleast in my opinion.
it just doesnt seem to carry enough emotion or energy as some of the other recordings out there.
the pitch seems a little bit higher than all the other recordings ive heard and the rushed tempo on mars seems to bring out the worst in the trumpet players.
climaxs atleast to me seem very stunted and never reach there full potential (or volume).
in most areas there is almost no rubato or emotion eg. the main theme on jupiter.
the timpanis are very shallow and the tuba in the loud notes on mars dont ripple enough im not sure if this is the orchestras or the conductors fault but it almost sounds asthough they left many of the lower end instruments out and replaced them with more tinny high pitched ones.
the repeated chords at the end of mars are rushed through as if the conducter himself just couldnt wait for it to be over, it is the same case with the last notes from the choir at the end of neptune. and the result: almost no emotional or myterious quality from either.
however having said all this the clarity of this recording is very good but overall i even found myself losing interest during many portions of the peices.
my opinion is to buy the charles dutoit version with the montreal orchestra it may be old but the remastering is very good and it is the best interpretation ive heard.
and ps i think i can hear colin davis sort of "humming" along with the melodies in jupiter when played very loud.
