Holy Moses opens with dark tribal beats complete with timpani, hand claps and tin percussion luring the listener into an almost Bob Fosse produced riff, strongly implementing Washington's classic Jazz training and love for dramatic musical theatre. Now with a secured spot in the hearts of Australian and International indie/pop/roots lovers, Washington clearly feels more comfort in bringing out the freaks she's had locked away, as Holy Moses is certainly an odd blend of greatness - a strange Bertie Blackman does Etta James musicality, swirled together with an austere yet purposely over done 'drama' that just heightens the excitement of the incredible instrument layering, leading you to believe that you are sitting centre field in a theatre with an iPod bud playing tracks from previous album 'I Believe You Liar' in one ear, whilst Chicago opens up on stage.
By no means is the song pretentious or 'too old'. Washington's clear, Aussie accent articulates everything you need to know, complete with Martha Wainwright-esque gasps, and an exciting energy in her voice as you can almost hear her throwing herself about in the studio, giving all she's got.
Make sure you watch the video clip - she's implemented professional choreography, glitter suits, Gaga makeup, and ladies with horns.
If this is anything to go by, the upcoming 2nd album will be better than anything out.
